It looks brilliant, it plays great, and it’s highly recommended.

If you’ve played the Super Mario Bros. games of old, chances are that you have some great memories of those titles.

Super Paper Mario is sure to satiate your desire to relive the experience that those titles offered, while providing some fancy new gameplay elements that result in a greatly enjoyable title. As is usually the case in any game starring the moustached plumber, the Mushroom Kingdom is in trouble and Mario’s the man to fix the problem. You see, some guy named Count Bleck is planning to destroy all existence, and Mario is supposedly the only one who can put an end to his shena****ns.

The beginning of the game offers up the usual Mario platforming experience that we all know and love: that of the 2D side-scroller in which Mario jumps on enemies and busts blocks for coins and power-ups.

The changes to the formula are introduced fairly early on, when Mario learns how to flip between the 2D and 3D “dimensions.” Hitting the A button on the Wii Remote flips the traditional 2D view to a 3D one, allowing you to see things that you normally couldn’t from the default perspective. This results in some innovative puzzles that require flipping between dimensions to find a solution to the problems you face in the game. Add a few light RPG elements (Mario can purchase/collect items that have a variety of uses, and he also periodically “levels up,” which increases his health and attack damage) and the ability to play as Princess Peach or Bowser at certain points in the game (each with their own abilities), and you’ve got an interesting mix of different gameplay mechanics that provide a satisfyingly entertaining experience.

It looks brilliant, it plays great, and it’s highly recommended.
