Now I know not many watch it here in south africa, but I do know there are a few that follow the nfl season. Anyway I am looking very forward to watching the superbowl season since its the first time ( well since 93 ) that two of the top teams that finished no1 in their conference ( Colts no1 in the AFC and Saints no1 in the NFC ) will be facing each other in the superbowl . This superbowl will also ft two of the very best quartbacks in the league Peyton manning ( Colts ) who may be regarded as the best quaterback of all time and Drew Brees (Saints), who is one of the most accurate quaterbacks in the league. Personally I am rooting for the Saints as I have been a big fan of Drew Brees since he was in Perdue and then later drafted by the San Diago Chargers.

This game is sure to be an offensive shootout and could possibly be the highest scoring superbowl since both defenses on either team are mediocre at best.

I belive that if Peyton does win his 2nd superbowl, he will go down as the greatest quaterback ever, just look at the stats

4,000 yard Club-
Peyton Manning has ten career 4,000 yard seasons. Dan Marino has done this six times and gets a bonus point for setting the record with this 5,000 yard season. Close behind is Favre with five, Elway with one and Montana with zero.
WINNER: Peyton

25+TD Seasons-
A little closer than I expected. Montana and Elway chime in with four seasons and Marino threw for 25+Td's seven times in his career. Brett Favre has done it ten times. But Peyton has done it every year of his career, so make that ten straight and counting
WINNER: Peyton

Career QB Rating-
The much beloved John Elway comes in at a paltry 79.9, Brett Favre with a 85.4 and Danny Boy has a 86.4. Montana and Manning are in the 90's however Petyon has Joe beat by nearly 2.5 boasting a career rating of 94.7
WINNER: Peyton

Hardware:
3 time league MVP
1 time Super Bowl Champ
1 time Super Bowl MVP

Don't really follow the NFL, but my money's on the Colts. Btw, will ESPN show a delayed broadcast in SA so I can watch it a a 'normal' hour?

erm, how does football actually work apart from a quarterback running over the line? I never understood it.

I've really tried to understand it but it is such a drawn out affair with lots of different teams(kickers, defenders, attackers) in a team.

Why do they only pass the ball once? I've seen in movies that they can pass it more than once. Why not do that more. Surely they should know the ball travels faster than the man.

For me, the quarterback IS football. He seems to be the guy doing all the work, probably wrong though. I wish that they would cut out all the ad breaks though, a 1 hour game lasting 3 hours is a bit too long for my liking.

They dont pass the ball only once ( the coach has to call the plays then tell the quarterback and then the quarterback puts that play into action), it depends on the opsing defense weakness , ie if they struggle to stop the run then the qb will hand the ball behind him to his runningback and the runningback will just get the yards instead, they might pass the ball alot if the defense secondary ( these are the players that are relied on stopping the passing plays ) struggles, basically it depends on what the defense give the them. Simply put the game is all about the match ups, you play your strengths and expose the oposing teams weakness so for example this superbowl game that is going to happen in 2 weeks time the saints biggest weeakness is their ability to stop the running game so the colts would expose this and run the ball more times than they would pass ( might i doubt this since they have the best quarterback in the game) the colts biggest weakness ( or from what I can tell ) is the passing game ( due to injuries) so the saints would pass the ball alot more times that the colts .

anyway I hope that helps. ( anymore questions just let me know )

correct in a way, the quarterback is sort of like the field general who calls the plays to the team which his coach or offensive co ordinator tells him ,

Thanks.

I've got more questions but will ask them tomorrow.

Last one for tonight.
1st-4th down. Do you always need to kick on 4th down or is it just standard game plan to kick it away rather than risk a turnover in the current position.

depending on how far deep you are into the oposing teams field ( i.e 30 yards till the endzone) then most teams would proberbly go for it but only if its 4 and inches or 4th and 1 otherwise they will go for the field goal instead .

Yeah gonna be insane,im a huge Colts fan, although would like to see the saints win this one, this is like the first time they have ever made it to the superbowl, and the colts always win so would be nice to see the saints take it, Brees is good, but you cant comapare anyone to manning, even Brady looks like a 10 year old compared to him...and I think its at 1-30 in the morning gonna be damn cool...

think of the quaterback as the fly-half/glory boy....

and think of the runningback/fullback as the flanks/eightman etc... do the hard work, none of the glory.

I get what you are saying about the runningback not getting as much glory as the qb, but there are plenty of teams which are a run first , throw 2nd team ( Baltimore, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburg ) Normally if a team drafts a rookie quarterback in the draft , they would rely on their running game to take the presure of their qb , so that he qb doesnt feel that its on his shoulders to try and win it.

I've learned how the game works mainly through playing MADDEN 09 on playstation, I think its a great game to watch, the only thing that annoys me is the amount of ad breaks. Obviously NFL is a stop/start type of game which is weird to watch seeing as I am so used to watching rugby where there is no real break for 40 minutes at a time.

If you are in the states or even in the u.k and watching the game on tv, the add breaks are not so much an issue as there ae 32 teams playing, so all you really need to do is change the channel and watch another game until the game you were watching previously comes back on.
