Supersport press release:

America’s most popular sports league, the National Football League, is coming to SuperSport.

SuperSport has partnered with the NFL to broadcast the sport which boasts superstars like Tom Brady, Eli and Peyton Manning and Drew Brees among a galaxy of other stars.

The NFL is made up of 32 teams in two conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The winner of each conference meets to play in the famous Super Bowl at the end of every season.

The NFL season kicks off on September 5, 2013, and SuperSport will broadcast both Monday Night Football and Thursday Night Football with the first game broadcasting on September 9.

SuperSport will cover the AFC Playoffs in January, which includes two Wildcard games, two Divisional playoff games and the AFC Championship game. The Pro Bowl, the NFL’s All-Star Game, will also be broadcast on January 26, 2014.

SuperSport’s coverage of the NFL season concludes with the Super Bowl, the world's biggest annual sporting event, on February 2, 2014.

“We are very happy to bring this to SuperSport viewers,” said Brandon Foot, head of Legal and Acquisitions at SuperSport, which is broadcast on the DStv platform. “This is a new and exciting partnership with the NFL, which ranks as one of the most professional leagues on the planet.”

Pumped! Just a pity they couldn't give us a Sunday 1pm East Coast game. They'd kick-off at 7pm locally.

So what's the Wild Card games?

Take out a pen and paper, clone, you're about to get learned;

- There are 32 teams in the NFL
- The 32 teams are evenly divided into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC), so 16 teams per conference.
- The 16 teams per conference are further divided into 4 divisions of 4 teams loosely based on geography. These divisions are known as the AFC & NFC North, AFC & NFC South, AFC & NFC East and AFC & NFC West.
- At the end of the season each conference sends its 4 division winners and 2 teams with the best records that did not win a division to the playoffs. The 2 teams are known as Wildcards. The two best division winners are given a bye in the playoffs (they get a weekend off) while the 2 ''worst'' division winners and the 2 best non-division winners (the Wildcards) are drawn against each other in the Wildcard Round (enter the ''Wild Card games''). The winners of the Wildcard Round are then drawn against the two best division winners in the Divisional Round. The two winners from the Divisional Round then face each other in their respective Conference Championship game and the two Conference Champions then play in the Superbowl to determine the World Champions.

I have tried watching American football, it a difficult sport to watch. Whole sport is not free flowing, in the middle of the game they have many stops, it's like they are on halftime.

Its actually a very easy sport to pick up, once you learn the rules and such.

The reason it doesnt appear free flowing is is because after every play they wait for the coach/offensive co ordinator/defensive co ordinator to call the plays then relay them to the Quarterback to tell his team what to do. If the Quaterback is succesful and the offence gains 10 yards, the get another chance to get another 10 yards ( depending on field position) if they fail to get 10 yards then the other teams offence goes onto the field and the team that failed to move the ball ,their defense goes onto the field and tries to stop the other team from trying to score or get 10 yards.

And while it may seem slow to the untrained eye, the teams are pressed for time during this period.

exactly. The offense is given 40 seconds to put the ball in play or they will receive a penalty for delay of game.

ESPN still has far more sport variety than Supersport. Also has a much larger geographical footprint.
