Surely this can't be right?

I've been having very slow transfer speeds for the last couple of days, but have also been frantically busy with work, so it hasn't bothered me too much yet. However, I am now back in my office and have been trying to work on aconnection that is usually pretty fast. But now I get this:

* Test Start Time : November 1, 2006, 9:07:04 am
* Test End Time : November 1, 2006, 9:12:58 am
* Download Time : 353.74 seconds
* Size of file : 5238323 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed : 115.69 (Kilobits/sec)
* Estimated line speed : 14.46 (KiloBytes/sec)

I've called 155 and they are "looking into the problem". I'm in Allen's Nek (West Rand), by the way, on Allensnek-1 (CID). I'm running a HUAWAII (can never spell its bloody name) card on a Toshiba laptop, and have been doing successfully for more than a year now. Anybody else seeing this?!?

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not prepared to go through that whole rigmarole - would rather make another plan for Internet then.

Ploempie, how did you determine this? I'd like to check if my signal is a problem here too...

Strange thing is I had good speeds on my original 3G card (Novatel). Then I upgraded to HSDPA, and everything was peachy (Novatel again). However, I experienced a problem with my card some time ago, and it was swapped for a new HSDPA card, but the bleeding HUAWAII thingy this time. So far I haven't have any disconnects, but the speeds have been terrible. I'm using the 3G Only profile using internetVPN as my APN. The only other thing that has changed (other than the card) is my location within the house. I added a new study and now find myself about 20m away from the original location. I doubt that the signal could drop that much right in my house, but I'm not ruling anything out at this stage...

Also, even in this new location, I have seen some mega transfer speeds on this very card; so it is probably something else. But formatting and reinstalling? I don't think so!

I picked up my lappy and walked 2 meters thataway. got better speed. walked a few more meters and got full speed. I'm on the edge of the cell so due to cell breathing i get speed in bursts.

Check the firmware version on the Huawei (pronounced Wowee) card first.

How many bars of signal strength do you get?

Are you using the small external antenna? I found on my Huawei HSDPA card that the antenna makes a big difference.

Lastly, indoor coverage is pretty difficult to achieve, so a complete drop in signal within 20 meters is quite feasible.

To check go and test outside.

formattin is not that bigga deal...i partitioned my drive so that c is bout 20gb big...it contains only xp and my drivers...the rest of my stuff is on various other internal and external drives...also made a dvd with all of my drivers on it...so...

i backup...format...reinstall...all in bout an hour or two...

and i do that bout once every 2 months...keeps the pc nice, clean and error free...

What do you do with all the apps that loaded dll's, etc. and write into the registry?

My XP system is currently so dog slow (thanks to some M$ patch, I can't find) that I'll need to rebuild and I'm not going to do this. So (being a sucker for punishment) I upgraded to Vista....

They always say that but you never hear back. If you check the call ticket you will see in a few days it will have been closed and nobody even asks.
Just watch how operators blame everything else - your PC, Microsoft, the signal, the weather. Everything apart from their vrot network :rolleyes: :rolleyes:
