Surge in international "one ring" missed call scam that can cost you hundreds of rand

I've received many of these lately. Luckily I'v never called back.

From Guinea and France mostly.

Why would anyone call back a missed call from an international number? I don't even call back missed calls from local numbers I don't recognise

If I got one from the state's I would be very tempted to call back.
Yup. Or France, Belgium and other European countries. Also, my company does business throughout Africa, so how does one tell? One can't, so the baddies infesting technology tools again ruin things...

Any missed call with an unknown number that don't leave a message, I will never return call.

Also I google the number, and if suspect.. I block it.

Humans are mostly retarded, hence the proliferation of these scams.

With clients in many jurisdictions, one has to return calls. After this - no ways though

I know what you mean. But let's not forget who the real baddies are and not blame the victims of the crooks' dishonesty.

Hopefully the retarded people you refer to are the scamsters.

The normal and healthy way of proceeding should be that people are honest, mean well, and won't lie, cheat and crook.

It's a sad turn indeed when things become so corroded that one has to approach other people with distrust and defences up.

Wife and I both have dual sim phones. These dodgy missed calls only occur via the MTN sim but never on the Vodacom sims. Tells me MTN has left a loophole open for these scammers.

I get so many spam calls and SMS's on MTN. But too lazy to change providers :p

Not true. I am on Vodacom and I have been receiving these calls almost 2-3 times a day (sometimes at 3 am) for the past two weeks.

It's not that easy - if it's a work number and you're involved in international projects then you could get calls from anywhere.

Got one from Redwood city yesterday...thought it's dodgy too since it didn't ring a bell...nope client of mine, the exact location was just slightly off.

Would it normally just ring once? That's what's happening. 1 ring and call drops.

Got one from France on the landline but was a returned call my dad took moments before, when i told the guy my dad is busy now, he swore at me and put the phone down :crylaugh: , i was shocked but also relieved because i slept nicely that night. :p He was going on about how to setup a powerball software lol.

Stupidity tax, it just goes to different criminals.

True, but one ring? no voice mail? You still going to call that back?
