I have the model up from this one, and its a beaut. The Sound that comes out of this thing when its tied to the right speakers is rich and pure.

I love mine to bits, and at R3k thats a pretty good deal.

the one up? the 1602? Is it a much better amp inside compared to the 1402?

Strongly considering the NR1402 deal myself, also as a starter kit. The intention is to hook up the HTPC and the Xbox for now, for use in a small lounge (max 5mX5m). Ideally I'd opt for a inconspicuous set of speakers (such as that Jamo kit which DW bundled with the Marantz last month). However, I was curious whether I could simply hook up a pair of mid-sized stereo hifi speakers which I inherited. Is there a serious need for a 5.1 set, or would a reasonable pair of floor-standing speakers do for now?

It's a great amp. You'll need to tweak some settings initially to get it sounding right, but once you do, it really pumps.

5.1 isn't necessary, as long as you have good stereo speakers and a decent sub. Although this depends on whether you want surround sound or not. I have the Jamo S416 set and only use the stereo, centre and sub channels. At -30dB volume, and an input source setting of +7dB, the windows start rattling :D

Thx Mike. We're not after surround just yet, so the big question is whether a sub is absolutely necessary. The current stereo speakers emit enough bass to rattle the windows on their own.

Can't say hey, that depends on your preferences. The main speakers in the Jamo set emits plenty of bass as well, but I prefer having a sub to handle frequencies less than 120Hz. Less work for the main speakers, and (IMO) you get a deeper, richer bass from the sub.

Depends greatly on the other speakers in the set. I'm skipping the sub on recommendation, initially, as apparently it's not really required with the floor standing speakers I'm getting. It won't be the case across the board though. It also depends on your application, of course.

Nah, I have the 1501.. one up, but older(ish) model.... 7.1 surround and such....

But in general Marantz amps just sound so nice when paired with the right speakers.

hmmm interesting discussion on stereo vs surround. I think that I will go straight for 5.1 as all I download is HD tv series, which are MKV's with 5.1 sound. Busy fighting with Dion Wired at the moment over stock issues... and apparently the price is R4700 and not R3000

I was like :wtf: Im gonna kill you boooooooooi!

Why not just order it online? There is no discussions - buy it and make them deliver it.

I considered that to be quite honest, but with online stores these days they so slow... and then you get an email like 2 days later saying sorry they sold out. Trust me its happened before!

I have secured one unit (in black) which Im picking up later :) They apologised about the price of R4700 and said R3000 is fine lol

Hope you enjoy! What speakers do you plan on using?

Since this seems to be a popular receiver, you guys should let me know if I should start a thread with all the settings that should be adjusted, since the default settings sound a bit flat. Should save you a few hours of scratching your head.

speakers? I honestly dont know. I would like to get the entry level Jamo S416 (i think that is the model) but that will have to happen later in the year when I get my bonus.

regarding the settings, that is a brilliant idea. I was actually going through all the pages now trying to find those settings you were talking about. Would you mind linking your post? I cant seem to find it...

edit : would my amp be able to power these? link Im gonna guess no? AMP is 50W and speakers are 80W so not enough ooomff??

So much of envy (I prefer black components)! With my luck they'll flaunt the "out of stock" argument in my face, but let's see

Good move getting the black, its such a nice little unit...

I love the "half" height design, just fits with the rest of my stuff so much better than the mostrous Pioneer and Yamaha amps.
