Suspect incorrect bandwidth recording

I use my bandwidth sparingly with a prepaid account through WebAfrica. I refrain from use due to pricing being so expensive--and a ripoff.

But, whenever I use the Internet more than usual I notice the bandwidth usage is not in line with my downloads. I have not taken exact note of what I download to then verify it against what WebAfrica reports, but it doesn't feel as if the usage is being recorded correctly. I'm not talking about 10% or 30% difference, but more than 100% difference. By example, say I download OpenOffice of a 100MB, it would not surprise me if my WebAfrica usage shows as +200MB.

I reported this some time ago and it was referred to SAIX and that someone else might be using my account. Well nothing has come of it. I got reply that all was just fine. I change my password fairly regularly, I use the WebAfrica option that only my phone number can be used for my usage.

But still the bandwidth usage seems excessively recorded. Off course I cannot prove or verify this unless I'm prepared to spend umpteen hours on it. And I'm not saying WebAfrica is recording incorrectly, but the recording is likely incorrectly done somewhere along the line.

So I'm wondering is anyone else experiencing excessively high recorded bandwidth usage?

It might very well be that in a country where we pay 1000% more for bandwidth than the norm, that the recording of bandwidth is flawed, so it might mean that we are likely paying 2000% more than we should.

Could someone with time on their hands look into this on their own usage? I suspect the bandwidth usage recording is flawed, but do not have the time or inclination to verify it.

HI Emmanuel

To put your mind at ease, the reporting is very accurate and accountable. We have thousands of users keeping a careful eye on their usage, all automated packet logs come from the edge routers.

I suspect someone or something is using your line. Trojan and spyware can now be undetectable to antivirus programs by using rootkits, which contually send spam using bandwidth. Alternatively hackers can run scanning tools on your modem default password to get your login details. You can prevent anyone else from using your password by enabling DSLSecure.

The following KB article you may find helpful as well: http://www.webafrica.co.za/kb/adsl/unexplained_adsl_traffic.html

Lastly give Jason a call or pm me your details and we can investigate for you .

Cheers

You got three tests to do for us and things you can monitor.

SAIX Stats : http://www.saix.co.za
WebAfrica Stats: http://www.webafrica.co.za
NetMeter -http://readerror.gmxhome.de/

Disconnect from the net, and reconnect a new session.
Get a file around 20MB - 40MB

just test file, here is one. - http://www.wcradio.com/archive/PrancingPony/PrancingPony-061021.mp3
(At the sign of the Prancing Poney, Lord of the Rings Online Radio Show)

When the file is done downloading, go to your connection in windows (hope you using PPPoe) and take a screenshot of the session, disconnect, reconnect and go get screenshots of that session from WebAfica and SAIX usage monitors.

This will confirm everything.

Firstly, thank you to everyone for your responses. :)

To put your mind at ease, the reporting is very accurate and accountable.

Thank you this is great news.

I suspect someone or something is using your line. You can prevent anyone else from using your password by enabling DSLSecure.

DSLSecure is done. I don't suspect anyone or anything is using my line. The excessive usage only happens when I download stuff.

The following KB article you may find helpful as well: http://www.webafrica.co.za/kb/adsl/unexplained_adsl_traffic.html

Nothing in this article sheds light.

Lastly give Jason a call or pm me your details and we can investigate for you.

Thank you, will do.

From what sites/programs do you download? If you download from p2p programs or torrents then it will be download and upload together.

Regular stuff, say OpenOffice from their website. Can;t see why this should down- and upload.

You got three tests to do for us and things you can monitor.

This will confirm everything.

Okay, will do.

btw, even normal http downloads have some upload to them. You cant expect it to be exactly the amount that you download. it should be a few mb higher due to upload and surfing to get to that site, or normal surfing that you might do during that time.

Excuse my ignorance MrG ... how do these links help - there's no stats anywhere there:

yeah, bwana linked directly.

Would be on the left side of saix.co.za under the meny, Usage stats, and on WebAfrica its in the client area.

But use bwanas links, direct links :)
