There is a guy phoning around thats offering a club membership that gives you 25% discount to 1500 retailers (Do we have that many retailers in South Africa?).

The Guys states that he is from 3 Mobile. Now 3 mobile is an Australian Cellphone Provider. I don't know of any South African Companies.

He says you get a years membership, all you need (This is where you get suspicious) is a once off debit order from your bank account. And he'll gladly do it on the phone.

When I said no thank you. He just hung up.
Ordinarily these telesales people will thank you for your time before they hang up.

The caller ID is +278224030
Vodacom3G. If you have time, could you please report this. The number as you can see is not valid as far as I know. Not enough digits. I assume it's Vodacom due to the 82. Is it possible to have such a number? I phoned it and you get nothing at all.
I'm telling everyone the number so they can be aware.

I had my dad's cellphone with me yesterday (He left it at home).
At about lunchtime, I got a call on both my phone and his at exactly the same time, from exactly the same number. The number I mentioned above. THAT IS NO FLUKE.
My number is only one digit different from my dads.

Please be careful guys.

Oh, didn't know I called you :)

Whenever I speak to these people, they categorically indicate that they get my details from the VodacomSP (Ok, I know Vodacom != VodacomSP) database.

If you can get any kind of details, contact names, etc. I'd love to follow this up. I believe they're a bit economical with the truth.....

Company's such as Retail Credit (Markham, RCS, Sterns, Foschini, etc) and the Edcon Group (Edgars, Jet, etc), and Banks (i work in a bank and know what i'm talking about) also sell ours details to marketing companies and other retail companies.

E.g

Bank A will sell info to Edcon.
Edcon will sell info to Flexicell.
Edcon will not sell to other retail companies, but might sell to others who are not direct competition (competition)

It's a circle of buying and selling, and then you get that annoying phone call from a stranger promising you millions when you die.

E.g

Call Centre Dude: Hello, may i speak to Victor Mxxxxxxxxxx please.
ME : Speaking
Call Centre Dude: Mr Mxxxxxxxxxx, this is James, i'm calling you on behalf of Hollard insurance. Can i have 5 mins of your time please.
ME : NO, i'm busy, bye.
Tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu tuu.

AFAIK selling personal information is illegal in this country. the central consumer database has all these numbers. You may have your details removed from their .. Also they have to tell you where they got your number from, again AFAIK it is part of the new laws that have been inplemented.

I had numerous calls llike that and managed to get my cell number off there. but now I recieve mms spam and where they got my number .....well that is the million dollar advertising question...

Afaik that is still in the draft stage if you are talking about the protection of personal infermation act. Have my doubts about that as well. Would most likely make it easier to give out information without being able to do anything about it.

3mobile

Hi Guys - 3Mobile is NO SCAM - you should check it out - it is a great place to get content for your phone - it is free and you can share content, photos etc. Even better - its South African! I know somebody from 3Mobile - will get them to participate in the forum.
