If I was an officer, I'd call the father of the victim and let him know that I have the perps and let him decide their fate.

These people offer society no value whatsoever, society won't miss them.

Stellenbosch seems to have become the crime capital of South Africa.

In the recently published list of the 10 highest crime suburbs in South africa, 5 of them were in Stellenbosch.

And there have been a string of murders.

This last one is horrendous beyond words.

4th suspect in Matie student's murder withdraws bail application

Cape Town - The fourth suspect accused of the rape and murder of Stellenbosch student Hannah Cornelius has withdrawn his bail application.

Eben van Niekerk was on Tuesday expected to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court in connection with the hijacking and subsequent attack on Cornelius and her friend Cheslin Marsh in Bird Street, Stellenbosch, on May 27.

Van Niekerk faces charges of murder, kidnapping and rape, and made his first court appearance on May 30.

National Prosecuting Authority provincial spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Van Niekerk had, through his legal aid lawyer, indicated that he wished to bring a bail application, but later decided not to proceed.

The matter was postponed to July 28, when he will appear alongside Nashwill Julies, Vernon Witbooi, 32, and Geraldo Parsons, 26.

Cornelius' body was found on the side of the road, near a wine farm outside Stellenbosch.

Her hijacked Citi Golf was also allegedly used in an armed robbery in Northpine, between Brackenfell and Kraaifontein, and police made their first arrests after a dramatic car chase.

Cheslin sees his and Hannah’s alleged kidnappers in court

Cape Town – For the first time, Cheslin Marsh came face to face with the four men who allegedly kidnapped him and his friend Hannah Cornelius in May.

The men are accused of raping and murdering Cornelius, Netwerk24 reported on Friday.

Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons, Nashwill Julies and Eben van Niekerk appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of kidnapping, assault, rape, and murder.

Members of the public and the accused were unaware that the 21-year-old Matie attended court proceedings.

Shortly before the case was set to be heard, members of the public were asked to leave the court. A court official said proceedings would be held in camera. Members of the public were allowed back into court after a few minutes. As people tried to get back in, Cheslin’s mother Marilyn Marsh slipped out of court unnoticed.

Magistrate Mia Brag postponed the case to September 28 for further investigation. She said DNA results were still outstanding.

Really horrible what happened to Hanna. When I see cases like this and what happened to that Courtney girl, it makes my blood boil. I end up wishing the absolute worst things that could happen to the suspects but at the same time I know I'm being completely immoral. I just can't help it.

'He was pressured into doing it' – Hannah Cornelius murder accused's mom

Cape Town – The mother of one of the men accused of killing 21-year-old Hannah Cornelius in May, says she believes her son was pressured into committing the murder.

Veronica Witbooi was speaking to News24 outside of the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court, where her son, Vernon, appeared alongside co-accused Eben van Niekerk, Nashwill Julies, and Geraldo Parsons.

The four have been charged with kidnapping, assault, rape, and murder relating to an attack on Cornelius and Cheslin Marsh earlier this year.

'He was intimidated'

Witbooi said her son had never committed any brutal acts, such as murder, before.

"That morning he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was drinking with them [the other accused] and he doesn't even drink. He was intimidated to do it. He was intimidated," a concerned Veronica said.

"Stealing, motor theft, things like that he appears in court for, but never for murder."

Inside the court, she called out to Witbooi, saying she would "pay in the money".

She later explained to News24 that the money was meant for his living expenses while he was held in the Stellenbosch correctional facility.

His three co-accused are in Pollsmoor prison.

'His life is in danger'

Witbooi said her son’s co-accused were angry that he was held separately from them.

"His life is in danger. We don't know what might happen to him while he is there. They [his co-accused] might hire men to go kill him," she said.

"But I don't want to say too much, our lives are also in danger."

Witbooi lives with her two other children in Kayamandi, just outside of Stellenbosch.

Prosecutor Lenro Badenhorst asked that the matter be postponed to give the State time to hand over the docket to the accused's attorney.

Badenhorst said other victims affected by the attack on May 27 were yet to be consulted.

The four accused, who were shackled, nodded as Badenhorst explained that the matter was likely to be transferred to the Western Cape High Court for trial.

Magistrate Eric Khaketla postponed the matter to December 13.

'He stays my child'

The men’s shackles clinked as they were escorted out of the courtroom.

Witbooi said, despite her unhappiness with her son’s arrest, she would continue to diligently attend court proceedings.

"It hurts me. It hurts me, but he stays my child. He will always stay my child," she said, before rushing off to her local bank to withdraw the money she had mentioned to her son earlier.

Cornelius and Marsh were accosted while they sat in her car in Bird Street, Stellenbosch, in the early hours of May 27. Cornelius' body was later found on the side of a road, near a wine farm outside Stellenbosch.

Her Citi Golf was allegedly used in an armed robbery in Northpine, between Brackenfell and Kraaifontein.

Police made their first arrests after a dramatic car chase.

The 'ol ''he's a good boy'' angle.

Face it, your son is rubbish. A career criminal by the sounds of things that graduated to the big leagues. And nope, nobody cares if he gets his arse run through in prison after what he done.

Well we hope so. In an ideal world it is a one time thing then you go to jail for it. ( Hopefully someone kills you while you are there)

Paperwork delays Hannah Cornelius murder case

Stellenbosch - Outstanding documents related to the transferral of the Hannah Cornelius murder trial to the Western Cape High Court on Thursday resulted in another postponement in the case against the four men accused of her brutal death.

Proceedings against Eben van Niekerk, Nashwill Julies, Vernon Witbooi and Geraldo Parsons in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court were rolled over to Friday, as paperwork confirming the transferral of the case had not yet been received.

Prosecutor Lenro Badenhorst was also unavailable, having been held up at a case in a different court.

The four are accused of murder, kidnapping and rape, following the brutal attack on Cornelius and her close friend, Cheslin Marsh, in May last year.

Cornelius’ body was found on the morning of May 27 on the side of a road, near a wine farm outside Stellenbosch.

She was last seen alive hours earlier, with Marsh, when four men approached her car in Bird Street, Stellenbosch.

Her Citi Golf is believed to have been used in an armed robbery in Northpine, between Brackenfell and Kraaifontein, on the day of her murder, and is also understood to have been used in a crime in Kuils River.

Last month, the matter was also postponed due to "issues" in the investigation on which Badenhorst had not wished to expand.

At the time, Magistrate Eric Khaketla postponed the case, saying the "loose ends need to be tied up".

This includes whether the accused would plead in a magistrate's court or a high court.

In November, the matter was postponed to give the State time to hand over the docket to defence attorney Henk Carstens.

He at the time said his clients first needed to be presented with the evidence against them to make an "informed decision" on their plea.

Hannah Cornelius murder trial heads to High Court

Stellenbosch - Four men accused of the murder of Stellenbosch student Hannah Cornelius are to stand trial in the Western Cape High Court.

Eben van Niekerk, Nashwill Julies, Vernon Witbooi and Geraldo Parsons appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court on Friday, where the case was transferred.

It was supposed to be transferred on Thursday, but was rolled over to Friday due to a delay in paperwork related to the transfer.

The accused are to appear in the High Court for their first pre-trial conference on March 9.

The four are accused of murder, kidnapping and rape, following the brutal attack on Cornelius and her close friend Cheslin Marsh in May last year.

Cornelius' body was found on the morning of May 27 on the side of a road, near a wine farm outside Stellenbosch.

She was last seen alive with Marsh hours earlier, when four men approached her car in Bird Street, Stellenbosch.

Her Citi Golf is believed to have been used in an armed robbery in Northpine, between Brackenfell and Kraaifontein, on the day of her murder and is also understood to have been used in a crime in Kuils River.

The men have not yet pleaded, but at a previous court appearance in November, defence attorney Henk Carstens requested the docket to allow his clients to make an "informed decision".
