Have you ever sat in a GLA?

Bloody thing is built for midgets...
Drove one for 4 days ;). Not so bad... Went on a trip with 5 and a full boot plus bags in the back. The car is too small for a weekend trip for 5 and is better suited for 4.

Middle seat is quite small. The rest is fine... Boot is average - will suit OP's needs

Not a "bad" price all thing considered & incl that pricey Nav. Pity no LED's & AMG kit; that's the options you really need imo
LED comes with Xenon lights. Also missing PDC if I can see well. Price is alright.

The one I drove was a '14 GLA220 CDI 4Matic with a whole bunch of options...
Harman Kardon sound
Rear camera + front and rear PDC
Automatic boot
Electric folding mirrors
Pano roof
Nav
Etc.....

That my friend means that GLA you drove is over R600K! For a jacked-up A-class and its not a high performance AMG model that would perhaps warrant the price...

Yes I'd never buy that... Forgot the AMG pack :D. I don't understand why someone would spend so much on what is essentially an A-Class

Considering you don't need 4x4 I would also consider vans for more load room or stationwagons for better road handling. Then just look at some tyres that can handle abuse to cover the potholes etc (H/Ts or A/Ts instead of normal tar only tyres). A/Ts will save you a lot of trouble if you have to deal with a lot of potholes and bad dirt roads.

Vans - Mercedes and VW make some nice ones, even some 4x4s!
Stationwagons - Subaru Forester would be my pick, best of all the requirements.

SUV - the X-trail is really good from a cost and maintenance side as far as I have seen. The new RAV is possibly the ugliest car they have made to date and has lost any offroad ability - and it costs as much as a Fortuner! Avoid. Forester also falls under the SUV category, my choice.
