Hi Everyone.

I'm dealing with a really frustrating situation at home. In January, we applied for a prepaid electricity meter. City of Johannesburg delayed for months to come and do the installation. They only came eventually at the end of May. Since the installation of the new meter, we have obviously been purchasing prepaid electricity. The problem we are faced with now, is that COJ is still billing us for the old meter in the statement. So now essentially we are expected to pay a much larger figure monthly when you factor in our prepaid purchases.

My father has repeatedly gone to COJ to complain about the matter, and requested them to have the old meter removed from their system as we don't have it anymore. The person assisting him explained the people who installed the prepaid meter had the responsibility of informing COJ that they have installed it, which they did not do. They keep telling my dad that they will send an email to put it on record that we do not have the old meter. They always confirm that they have sent the email, and yet nothing has been done. They always send a new email with the request.

It's really stressful because the electrical bill for the old non-existent meter is piling up even though we are paying for prepaid electricity.

What else can I do in this situation? Has anyone else experienced this problem, and how did you resolve it? Can COJ still have our electricity cut off as a result?

Maybe try and contact your ward councillor if they are not one of the useless ones. They may be able to help or point you in the right direction.

or maybe you can try a company to do it on your behalf.

Contact them and see if they can maybe assist in resolving the matter for you. They will charge you for the service if they can fix it but at least they will know the competent people to speak to in getting it resolved.

Hi. Am in the exact same position. I switched to prepaid in March this year(2024). Still being billed for kwh on the old meter as well as a basic service charge. My electricity bill is currently around R1500(incl my prepaid usage). Getting a cold shoulder from Langeberg municipality. Will be going to see the guys who removed the old meter, find out if and why it was not taken off my name. Hope for some joy there.
