Switching to Mac. HELP!

CMD + ~

Although I prefer using gestures
Yes - as mentioned above - command + ~ is a compromise but doesn't let you quickly switch between two open windows of one app when you have 3 or more open - it cycles through all 3 or 4. Small things that help productivity. I'm thinking about making Hyperswitch default for a month to see if it's worth the switch but I need to do more digging about what it sends back home for 'Beta testing".

I honestly got so used to CMD + ~ that I actually went and installed Auto HotKey when I moved back to Windows and implemented a hotkey for this.

Somehow I always manage to get in Windows into this Alt-Tab situation where I switch between 2 windows, only for another app to somehow inject itself into the list and then I switch to the wrong one a couple of times.

@Willie Trombone have you given Amphetamine a go? Not the narcotic, but a handy app to keep your mac awake when you need it to be.

Didn't think I'd need this but I'm pasting over 100k individual curl commands into the terminal and about to see if it can run them consecutively lol. I don't want it falling asleep on me if I can avoid it, I may just use that ta!

Anyone using / trying Hyperswitch? One of the things I've had a harder time getting used to is being able to use Alt-Tab (Command-Tab on Mac) to switch, not only between apps, but between multiple windows of an app. e.g. I might have 3 Excel workbooks open but because, unlike my browser, Excel doesn't provide a visual cue of the other open files, I find it less intuitive to be able to find the window I'm needing. Pressing Command + ' allows me to switch between those windows - that's all good and well but I just don't find it as intuitive as the win task switcher.

I read about Hyperswitch and gave it a go - it's really good and does exactly what I want it to - it uses Option Tab to switch between apps and multiple windows of the same app which I find far more intuitive. e.g. I might be working between two of 4 open Excel workbooks and wanting to switch regularly between the two while comparing or updating stuff - Windows does this pretty well with alt-tab switching between the two most recent windows if you let go in between alt-tabs. Hyperswitch does a great job of the same thing. Mac's command + ' allows me to switch until I find the one I'm looking for, but it switches in the same order, so if I have 4 windows open and am in window 2, but want window 1, I have to press option + ' three times and make sure I'm paying attention when I do so I don't overshoot.

It's seems like a small deal but it affects my productivity pretty much.... all that said, I'm loathe to install ADDITIONAL background software for the sake of it and can't yet decide if I just need to get used to the default (always beneficial) or start using this new app. The app is also "in beta" and by default collects too much telemetry for my liking - and I have to allow it to capture the screen etc. which I'm not keen on. I see the dev is Germany based so less of a concern there, but still...
I also recommend reading the article about https://www.cogniteq.com/blog/top-flutter-app-development-companies which talks about the Top 10 Flutter app development companies, which will be useful information.

Your dilemma is relatable for anyone who juggles multiple windows of the same app. Hyperswitch sounds like a handy solution, especially with its intuitive Option+Tab functionality for switching between apps and windows. The convenience it offers for quickly toggling between specific Excel workbooks, for instance, could be a real productivity booster.

That said, your hesitations about additional software are valid. The need to grant screen-capture permissions and the telemetry concerns can feel like a trade-off, even with the added functionality. Staying within native system tools often minimizes these risks, but it can sometimes mean sacrificing efficiency.

If you find the default Mac behavior slowing you down significantly, Hyperswitch could be worth it. Just ensure you configure its settings to limit telemetry and review permissions carefully. Alternatively, exploring productivity workflows with existing shortcuts like Mission Control or apps with better native multi-window support might bridge the gap without needing extra software.

Command + ‘ cycles forward - command + shift + ‘ cycles backwards

cmd + tab and cmd + ` work well for me since one key above the tab (on my current keyboard layout at least).

For other keyboard layouts I'll change it to whatever is above the tab.

What do you guys use for handling zip / rar / .7z etc. files?
I used to use 7zip on Windows. I'm using the command line version on Mac (no gui available) but no doubt there must be a decent archiving tool for Mac that allows encryption and hides content file names if you don't have the PW?

Keka or the unarchiver

Ah, I missed that you want encryption. Terminal is your answer, or a 3rd party app if you want GUI
Yeah, terminal is fine but sometimes you want to select 15 files in a directory and zip/encrypt them. It’s not always convenient unfortunately. Keka is leka. Well worth the 100 ront.
