I'm currently on anytime 100 shared phones with my father, its on his business and we just never changed it.
His currently paying around R600p/m for one contract 2 phones.

The contract is up and I want him to cancel as we hardly ever use the minutes we are given.

I also want to buy an iphone 5 for R6500 rather than pay R350p/m to MTN.

Questions:

  • I have large sim in my existing phone, iphone has nano sim, who would change this and how much?
  • Cancelling contract, is there anything I need to show MTN or can we just walk into a branch and cancel or cancel over the phone?
  • I see I can buy airtime and data on fnb banking, is that the best way to add airtime and data?

In my opinion prepaid is the way to go. Cost is no longer an issue as most prepaid calls are now cheaper than contract calls. You are not tied into contract and or provider and can port to any provider as and when you want.

Prepaid for me = freedom

In regards to FNB - yes very convenient. They also allow you to recharge even when your balance is zero. With many vendors you cannot do this as you need airtime to access their services.

In regards to MTN - not sure how they operate but I will suggest to get the cancellation in writing just as a backup.

Good move! There should be an email address that you will need to contact in order to cancel. Generally it would need to be in writing somehow. As for nano-sim, you just do a sim swop when you have chosen your service provider, however you can only do this once the contract has been cancelled and you have already been converted to prepaid.

The opposite for me. Always need to worry if I have enough airtime for when I want to make a call, then I need to recharge.

Contract "just works". That's freedom.

Our contract expired in May, does MTN auto renew for further 24months if you dont cancel before contract expires?
