What do u mean Please no !

HELL NO !!!! It's like religion in my house... every year the 06/01/****

All is watching the start and the race over the period of time... lol

From this report, they believe Symons died almost instantly... http://www.24.com/sport/?p=SportArticle&i=383227

Point given. Fact is he was stranded for 3 hours... This can be debated on end. Same happened last year with the Australian guy. He died of a hart attack after his crash response time there Killed him. So yes it is possible that he died on impact but we will never know for sure....

Very sad either way

No debate necessary, you made a very valid point...it still remains a tragedy!

According to this the Australian guy got support within 25 minutes:
http://theage.com.au/news/world/aus...ing-dakar-rally/2006/01/10/1136771526533.html
a lot quicker than 3 hours, and probably quicker than most attempts. Short of doing 10000 laps in an enclosed circuit in the middle of the desert, I doubt medical support can be improved much..

@Nanfeishen, there are many ways that one can be charitable. I may be wrong, but I think these guys are doing it more for the challenge than anything else.

Briliant response there... better than anywhere in SA @ any given time...lol.

We'll it's like someone mentioned on this thread it's one of the risks you sign up for.

I personaly would love to take part even once only in my life time...
Respect to all the Dakar racers.... RESPECT !

I say leave it as it is, I'm sure they have compensation packages for locals that are adversely affected, if not then these should be implemented.

You can't buy a life man.... That is some sick logic...

Sorry I killed your 5 year old but here's $10 000. Feel better yet?

I don't see any reason why they cannot mark the route. It doesn't have to be as small as a normal road, they could make the road 100 meters wide but at least you are giving the locals a fair chance then. Don't cross the barriers today.

Problem with it is: that part of the race is the navigation part and that you can choose your route. I would be all for it though in the town areas.

I was thinking more of owners of cattle that got killed getting compensated.. what I forgot to type was perhaps educating people, letting them know about the race and its dangers? I'm sure this has already happened, and the casualties so far have been from extreme circumstances.

Perhaps villagers can get given some sort of warning system, like a siren that goes off if a vehicle is within 2km of the village? Although this might place the drivers at jeopardy, if I recall correctly there were some hijack attempts in the past?

Then they are going to need to think of something else. I just don't see it lasting currently. Just wait until one of the Human Rights groups takes this on as their baby. They have a very very strong case.

Just found out that Symons was a friend of my sister's boyfriend. They went to school together so he's obviously really upset about it.

:(
