Cape Town – A mother whose daughter was slapped across the face by a Table View Primary School caretaker has criticised the way the school handled the situation, and described the man’s sanction as a slap on the wrist.

The caretaker, charged by the school governing body (SGB) with improper conduct, was found guilty and issued with a final written warning.

Noluthando Nxasana said her five-year-old daughter, enrolled in the school’s crèche, and her two friends were physically assaulted by the man while they were playing on the school grounds.

The children apparently followed the caretaker to his working station and then, out of annoyance with the children, he chased them away and allegedly roughly pushed one, slapped the other, and spanked the bottom of another with his belt.

Nxasana accused the school of trying to misinform parents about what had happened. She said when the incident happened on September 19 she was at work when she got a call from the school claiming that her daughter had taunted the caretaker who in return pushed her to the ground.

What does the CCTV shows? This should be mandatory in all schools.

“We must never underestimate the trauma of corporal punishment, especially if the child never experienced it before,” said Nxasa.

I can imagine this must have been a MASSIVE shock for the child.

Fok...some broom pusher at MY child's school, must assault her like this.

I'll do some "slapping" and "pushing to the ground", myself.

Lets face reality - children are the absolute worst kinds of humans. They can be so vindictive and cruel. Most often a mirror image of the parents' sensibilities and values.

Corporal punishment never killed anyone.

The caretaker should be facing criminal charges. It really doesn't matter if the child taunted him. Or even if the child hit him.

Actually at that age they often appear vindictive and cruel. Not a reflection of the parents. Nor anything wrong with the child. They're still learning to socialise. Only an idiot would hit them for it.

On the contrary a search immediately turns up cases of pupils being killed.

Having been a kid myself, and seen what some of my fellow kids did, I really must reserve judgement in this, and suspect the kids possibly even got just deserts.
Take a look here: School 'bombing' tradition behind PMB school boy's death
All that article tells me is that schools often have sick and depraved traditions. And they had them when corporal punishment was the norm.

The caretaker is an adult and according to the article these were little children. He's in the wrong regardless of what they were doing. He needs to learn to control his temper. Maybe he needs a good hiding? How else will he learn right from wrong?

Teach your brats manners.
Well the brat is the caretaker.

Yoh! Bishop's could have had a popular channel on some websites.
Fiona must've taken spanking to a whole new level. And to think some people don't condone corporal punishment.

Case in point that there are, and should be, exceptions to every rule.

Well said. There would be a new level of hurt unleashed on that caretaker by me, had he touched my kids, let alone slapped or spanked or whatever he’s done.

Corporal punishment?
Agreed.

Slapping a child across the face?
That is not disciplinary. That is done out of anger and is abuse.

If I had a kid in school and he/she gets a spanking for bad behavior, fair play.
Slap my child across the face? Consequences there will be.
