I do about 20 orders a year from Amazon. And another 20+ from China, never needed a import thingy, the China orders go through customs without paying any import duties, guess they don't really know what's in there, the sender states the contents as "carbon" worth 10$, in reality is fishing reels and rods, worth thousands. The day they ask me to send proof of purchase for the China stuff I might get a R1500 penalty, plus have to pay import fees

Unless Takealot actually has the stock at my local warehouse, my consistent experience has been that Amazon delivers quicker to my front door in usually 6 to 7 days, with Waitalot (as my wife calls them) taking 10 to 14 days. I realise Waitalot is being delayed by their 3rd party suppliers but it is because they first send to Takealot, who then resends it to me. I always start by searching Takealot but the range is very limited and searching is not very relevant. A recent example was for a shower speaker - yes Takealot has them but all the old designs. Amazon has ones with LCD displays with the battery level shown. Same went for bidets with a product or two listed with no useful descriptions at all I don't even bother reporting this to Takealot anymore, I just look elsewhere.

The service at Amazon has been good too as they've offered free shipping to make up for one problem I had. Takealot basically wants to return and credit items.

I have complained to Takelot before too about really inadequate product descriptions and they just pass the blame to suppliers. But it is up to Takealot to enforce minimum standards like for masks whether they are real N95 spec or not. Amazon items carry fuller descriptions, better FAQ, and also often have how-to install videos.

Lower value items are cheaper/quicker locally (if Takealot has it in stock).

Higher value items (that carry and international warranty) are much cheaper from Amazon - bought a Lenovo Thinkbook about 2 months ago - paid 19k (all incl).

Now it is about 17k (with the better exchange rate). This is the 2nd gen Thinkbook - not even available locally.
Gen 1 with lower spec is around 17k locally.

Amazon is basically cheaper but you risk the lack of warranty.
If they get that right, I imagine they'll really begin to challenge Takealot down here.

Do you pay separate import duties when buying from third party sellers on Amazon UK?

I've bought some stuff before from Amazon directly and I am aware they add the estimated import duties to the total.

How does it work when sold and shipped from third parties? Does it come to your door or postal office? Customs?

Amazon ships door to door.

3rd party sellers - usually you can't buy unless they ship via Amazon.

Its usually cheaper and faster to order from Amazon vs Takealot, or other stores locally.
Shipping is usually the killer - if its a heavy item, buy locally. If its electronics or light, buy internationally.

Good example would be my merc needed a new xenon inverter, and lights. I ordered the entire set for around 100$ + 30$ shipping. Was under 1300 zar (2-3 years back). Locally wanted around 4-6k for a secondhand set.

I got the new set almost the same week I ordered it from Amazon.

Amazon also has good aftersales service, which Takealot does not.
