Takealot's plan to compete with Amazon in South Africa

Takealot believes the plans it implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic and the years that followed will help it remain competitive in the South African e-commerce market when Amazon launches in the country.

That is according to Takealot Group CEO Fred Zietsman, speaking in a recent interview on 702.

Takealot better start cutting costs unless they still have "unlimited unprofitability cover" as in previous years. Amazon imho will get quite aggressive. And suppliers do go where there is reach but customers also go where they get Amazon Prime

I’m referring to Amazon offering their catalogue of goods here. Not just another platform for locals.
My understanding is that’ll be both. To what extent Im not sure but obviously other than books and their own brands most would probably be via local distribution for those with exclusivity.

Has it even been confirmed the Amazon is definitely launching in SA?

You would think it would have happened if it would have. They clearly have all the time in the world. Maybe just before end of the year?

Been a few weeks since I drove past their new HQ but it still looked under construction the last time.

Yeah no those steps have long lost their edge and suppliers are looking to move away from TaL. Get some more competent people to lead and not someone that looks like Doogie Houser.

However, in October 2023, Bob Group managing director Andy Higgins said he believes Amazon will initially struggle against established South African e-commerce platforms like Takealot, Bob Shop, and Bash
Lol, Andy thinks Bob Shop is a competitor to Amazon ... or even Takealot.

Goodness. Another rehashed TaL vs Amazon article. Just launch, and get it over and done with... Ama-taking your sweet time!
