Takealot takes aim at "offshore online shopping" in South Africa

Ya this is ridiculous.

However, what takealot has which the others won't, is knowing that you will get your delivery in a couple of days. For some people, the premium will be worth it.

I do agree though that it's not a level playing field if you are paying different taxes for the same goods - then the price difference should be a premium for getting your goods quicker. Although a lot of these people will be VAT vendors so do they even pay in that case?
5 to 8 business days from Takealot works out at pretty much the same as Temu in a lot of cases :)

And it feels like the more competition, the higher the pricing ...

They used to be my default online store as the pricing was decent relative to everyone else. But recently, it seems that everything I search for, Takealot is more expensive
Read up on enshitification....Takealot has basically cornered the market and is now focused on increasing their shareholder value, not undermining other platforms. Therefore they think since you have no easier alternative you will be willing to pay more. It's all algorithmically derived.

takealots prices on some items are daylight robbery, their sellers are taking the piss - double or more on many items, even compared to Makro.
They've been all too happy to let sellers artificially inflate prices so they can pull the "Was R999 now R599!" when most shops are selling it at a cheaper price of R499 anyway. Lekker when kak tactics work in your favour but now they want to moan.

The sellers on Takealot are often also crooks but they get shafted by Takealot, it’s a total sht show for sellers over there.

Honestly how them and the "seller" handled my phone "repair" this year... They can take a leap, freaking a month and a half and eventually had to refund me as the phone disappeared.

It's funny how they always pulled the "it's the seller's responsibility" line.

So what are they crying about. If people are no longer buying from them, it should also be the seller's responsibility...

Basically the argument is, government taxes and import duties increases costs of importing therefore those costs is forwarded to the customer. Whereas direct shopping and shipping platforms like Shein and Temu doesn't face the same costs (or skirts by through loopholes and illegality).

Government's argument for these stringent added costs for thing that we do not even produce domestically is capital exchange controls. Then the ANC's policies of middle man economics (aka BEE) exacerbates the cost of living even further.

So instead of competitive prices for goods, we pay exorbitant premiums on every item we buy.

Ultimately in such a disfunctional system, it is your duty as a consumer to support the circumventing of these Draconian rules, so if government tries to stop Temu or Shein from selling at these prices. Vote for a better more caring government.
Let's be frank, every industry under pressure tries to lobby government for protection status. Temu and Shein (or their customers) pay exactly the same import duties. If Sars isn't enforcing it then the problem is with them either being incompetent or because the values are truly so low they consider it unnecessary administration. What TaL is asking for is different rules for them. Even if Sars were to enforce it to the letter they would still end up 5-10 times cheaper.

I stopped buying from TaL exactly because of this crap and prices being better elsewhere locally.

To be honest, my experience with Takeot with regards to deliveries have been excellent. By far the most of the time the items are a day or 2 earlier.

Temu is great, but it seems like Buffalo is flooded, and starting to slip. Hope they step up.

Why don't the sellers on takealot buy it on Temu, mark it up a 100% and sell it on takealot. Takealot customers benefit from only a 100% mark up and not the usual 300%.

Temu delivery time is excellent and clears customs relatively quick but then a SA courier company gets hold of it and things fall apart.

If the item is in stock sure

From what I heard the courier company is doing a good job under all the orders.

I actually chuckled when I saw this on the shelf in Builders. To be fair, the one I bought from Temu was inside a clear, brandless plastic bag and Builders' one had a name and some accommodating packaging :p
