Ah yes, I keep thinking they were 7Ah. :)

:) I run a modem and a 6 watt LED light from mine for 2 hours and all the front lights are still on. Guess the standard batteries will go eventually, let's just hope Eskom will sort out their sh*t soon :crying:

The Mecer 2000va one on takealot is good too, and you can turn the beeper off using the software :)
That and one of these are very useful - http://titan-ice.co.za/multi-plug-iec-55-way-10-amp.html

Got my mac mini, router, and dsl modem running on one of them.. haven't had a chance to test it for a full black out yet but it seems to go down 2-3% every 5 minutes (screen off).. will see how it lasts properly soon im sure.

Does that adapter from titan ice allow you to power anything on a regular plug? Im thinking of getting that UPS for use by my router exclusively. Will the UPS stay powered on or does it turn off after 5 minutes automatically like some of the others do?

Why not test by unplugging it?

i gots the 2400va of mecer, linked to 2x 105ah battery's (24v setup)

And now there's no loadshedding for the moment :( :(

But i have no doubt loadshedding is not finished for CPT. Winter is here and the grid can't keep up with all the heaters that will be using the power.

I was looking at various UPS units on takealot, and was wondering if anyone has used one of the cheap ones for powering just their routers during load shedding.

Take this for example:
http://www.takealot.com/rct-650va-line-interactive-ups/PLID32714409

What seemed weird however was how overwhelmingly positive the reviews are on every single UPS on the takealot website. So good that they seem fake. I've never seen such reviews on any other type of product on takealot. Either these are some awesome UPS's, or takealot is messing with us.

Thoughts?

So I think the replies here have put things into perspective. Likely not fake reviews. I know of 6 of these little guys (slightly bigger ones) that have been purchased from Takealot and they are all humming along nicely without any troubles (buzzers removed of course). I have one as well.

I have a RCT-650VAS, I run my DLink DSL-2500U and DAP-1360 Access Point, 4% load during load shedding, gives me just over 4 hours, as load-shedding is 2 hours I am at the 50% mark which is optimum for the batteries [that is my understanding], 10 ms switch over when power trips does not effect the devices and I am happy with it. As for the beep i disable via software, as i never fully discharge my battery I do not have the issue some others do.

My understanding is that 50% discharge is the sweet spot, don't go over it as you reduce the life cycle of the battery dramatically, so always spec for 50%

Sparhawk , Correct. Don't use more than 50% (if you do. this will cut the battery's life down dramatically)

Did you link any additional or stronger battery's to the RCT-650VAS ? Or do you get 4hours on the standard 7ah Battery' or 9ah Battery ?

Has anyone tried using a Gel 8ah battery yet? Or perhaps even an AGM one?

My Mecer 2000VA arrived this week. I've set it up but haven't had a chance to see how long it will last. Will post results here when I do. The software on this model allows you to turn off the alert beep which is great

They all allow you to switch off the buzzer. If you do run it flat, then it resets.

Hello all,

Some reviews over on Takealot said they were disappointed with the RCT model not having a power cable or some sorts? Want to order one of these asap, and want to have everything set up to run from the get-go. Can anyone who has one clarify?

Yep they don't come with power cables, just get some kettle plugs and you're good to go.

Think you'll find they were referring to the standard PC cable that goes to the wall. All you do is unplug your existing cable from the PC and plug it into the UPS, a cable supplied with the UPS now goes to the PC.

Ah - ok, thanks. Thank I have one of those lying around.

See that in the pic above, you can even plug in the modem and phoneline directly into the back of the unit - which is useful! What would the USB out be for? Charging devices or something similar?
