What would the USB out be for? Charging devices or something similar?
To monitor the status of the UPS, charge remaining etc. The UPS is supplied with software to load on your PC (usually Windows only).

And more importantly to broadcast a shut down signal to all your machines. The primary purpose of small UPS units is to give you enough time to shut down safely.

Didn't know it could do that – good to hear.

The RCT and Mecer devices work on Linux too.

Running Mac, but have VM Win 7 installed as well, so should be able to make a plan.

Ordered now, hoping to have it by Tuesday. :)

Hello all,

Apologies for taking this off-topic, but if answered here, don't need to create a new thread for a silly question!

Takealot pleasantly surprised me with free delivery on a Saturday! Just unpacked it – dang, it's heavy!

Question:

It says "Do Not Attach Power Strips... or Xray machines; ventilators, vacuum cleaners etc.

So – does that mean what I think it means? Is a "power-strip" a multiplug?

Do I need to connect whatever I want to run to each individual plug? I cannot simply plug in one of those multi-plug units that feeds my Mini, Modem, Decoder etc. into one of the plugs?

I'm all for doing what the manual says – but have also learnt that sometimes, what is said, and what can work – are two different things.
Just wanted to check!

Many thanks!

I noticed that on my RCT UPS instruction. Its more to prevent people from plugging in every appliance they own and trust me, they do. I'm currently using a multiplug on mine as I run a telephone and speedpoint that use 2 pin plugs.

Thanks for the reply - did some more reading, seems most agree that it's fine, provided one doesn't get greedy! :)

I'm going to have to do more reading - think I will need to get the insulation tape and pliers out. Since we're a PC free family, the 4 kettle-plug outputs on the unit I bought, are useless to me. At least I can use the two 3-prong plug outputs as is.

Hoping that I can simply splice kettle-plug male-ends on to some of my electronics (I.e external HDD enclosure), to be able to use all the outlets efficiently!...

This, its mostly a safety thing, because once there is a plug strip people can plug anything in without thinking. As long as you are careful with what you plug in you should be fine. If some contractor decides to plug his power drill in there all bets are off :)

Been using a plug strip with one of mine for 5 years without any issues.

Ideally find a plug strip you can open up, that way you can wire it in (same as wiring a normal plug basically) without the need for any splicing.
