Sorry Uncle. Should have bent that tree when she was young.

Check your wheelbearings on the trailer before you leave.
You will be surprise, the think to check is the tires , they crack of age. But I do a proper check always, and after the sea wash the salt of. Trailer now 30 years old and still going strong. Still got those small tires on.

How much heavier is a car on fuel with a venter trailer. Car without trailer 13 km/liter. Car with trailer = x km/liter

Your best bet would be to try it and find out.

If you worried about the extra weight. You can remove the back seats of your car and the interior panels. Also the hood lining adds a couple kgs.

On the plus side if you remove the car interior then you wont need the trailer. You will have extra space in the car. 2 for 1 cyber Monday special.

You don't know my wife , she packs.
Then it might be cheaper with a trailer.
Look at it like this, @Rajah has 100 bricks in wheelbarrow and can easily push or pull the wheelbarrow, no sweat

Tell @Rajah to now take those 100 bricks and stack them on his head and see how far he walks. His poor legs will buckle in and he will be in his moer by the time he gets to Somerset East.

My point is it is sometimes cheaper on fuel to pull something than carry the same weight. You do the maths and decide yourself.

As mentioned earlier, definitely get the wheel bearings of the trailer checked & lubricated / replaced if they are worn and also get the shock absorbers checked / replaced as well.

Secondly, make sure that ALL of the tyres on the trailer (including the spare are NOT OLDER than 5 to 6 years - as they tend to deteriorate with age & exposure to the sun, and may also have flat spots on them if the trailer has been standing in one place for a long time (without it being supported on trestles / wheel stands).

If the tyres do need replacing, make sure that they are all replaced with the same make & size as well & inflated to the correct pressure for a full load (increase the spare's tyre pressure to about 20kPa above that, as it tends to lose pressure if not used and stored for a long time).

Also check what the load limits are for your tow-ball and the gross vehicle mass towing limits for your car as well - as that will have an influence on your vehicle's stability at highway speeds - watch these videos by John Cadogan (AutoExpert) about all those technicalities & considerations.

You can also test & check that ALL of the lights on the trailer are working and plug the trailer wiring connector into the car's socket to check if the connectors on each are wired correctly (the correct brake / tail & indicator lights illuminate simultaneously on both the vehicle & trailer).

Garden Route you say

Leave the wife behind. Pick up @Rajah on your way down

He will blow better than your wife anyday

No son, you are confused. I don't do bombings, although looking at this one's logic he might need an explosive placed under his behind.

Trailers are a pain in the arse. Parking is a nightmare, safety is a concern if there is a blowout, they're easy to break into. I bought a Thule roof luggage system instead and have never looked back. Only problem with that is to watch your vehicle height, especially when entering underground car parks.

My advice to you is a happy wife will result in a happy holiday. Forget all the ,,,,,,,,,, advice given here. If what your wife want to take with on holiday will not fit in the car take the trailer. The around R100 to R150 extra cost for fuel will be money well spend.

The extra fuel and risk is directly related to how afraid of your wife you really are.

It is a 1:1 ratio, so you should be able to calculate easily.
