know your enemy?
I sent this to the Hellkom site, any comments?
----------------------------------------------
Hi, I dont know if anyone has looked into this already, but I think it would be great if someone with the resources, time and ability could write an in depth article analysing the various motivations for Telkom's behaviour. If their motives are publicly known, perhaps it will help the fight against them? You have to know your enemy to fight him best, right?
Apologies if this has already been covered somewhere.
I wrote the following on my blog, but am not sure of my facts and reasoning.
"After reading this article (
http://mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=693), it became clearer as to why Telkom are being such a-holes with regards to making affordable 24/7 internet connectivity a reality. If that were to happen, those with access to such connectivity would be able to use VOIP (e.g. Skype) to make their voice calls. This means that Telkom doesn't just stand to lose revenue from their ADSL and ISDN products, but also from the millions of landline calls made between consumers every day. Likewise with their ridiculous 3gb cap on ADSL accounts; if consumers are going to be using VOIP, then Telkom want to make damn sure that all those little voice data packets pay for their sins by contributing to the bandwidth quota for the month.
