My phone delay Whatsapp messages and once I open it am flooded with messages.

Phone is not rooted and on Marshmallow.

I currently use Tasker to launch Whatsapp every 15 minutes, wait 10 seconds and then go to home. This helps, but at the inconvenience of being interrupted when WA pops up. And then the homescreen 10sec later.
If I omit the 10sec and home screen option it's a little more bearable, but since not rooted, I still have to manually touch recent apps to continue with what ever I was busy with.

Question:

Is there a background option to ping/poll/sync the Whatsapp servers for new messages?
Alternatives?

Do you have your phone power saver settings set up to stop WhatsApp running in the background?

Can you post details/steps on how you did this?

I also use tasker to open Zello every 2 hours as it always closes on it's own even though I set it as a protected app so battery optimisation doesn't close it, but can't figure out how to open and minimize.

No battery optimization. I also have it on a list of apps to run when the screen is off, called Protected Apps (Huawei P8 lite 1st edition).

Does WA have permission to run in the background?

I thought it was on the list of Protected Apps, but it wasn't. Thanks to you and @Sinbad it's now on the list.

It does have background data on.

I'm going to test it without Tasker's help and see how it goes.

If you need more detail than what my screenshots provide, I (or someone else willing) can elaborate.

It's a little embarrassing to admit that my Whatsapp is fixed after allowing it to run with screen off (thought it was). I consider myself an advanced user, but forgot simple troubleshooting. Thanks all.
