TATA HARRIER SUV SEVEN-SEATER VERSION TO DEBUT IN 2019, ONE OF THREE MAJOR TATA LAUNCHES NEXT YEAR

OVERDRIVE has learnt from viable sources at Tata Motors that the company will launch the seven-seater version of the Tata Harrier SUV, thus far codenamed the H7X by the end of 2019.

This will one of three major launches for Tata Motors next year. The first will be the Harrier in January 2019 and the other being the production version of the 45X premium hatchback.

The production version of the H7X will be based on a reworked version of the OMEGA architecture from the Harrier. The platform will most likely be stretched out to accommodate the third row of seats, building further on the impressive sense of space in the five-seater Harrier.

Engine and transmission options will remain the same as the Harrier. The Harrier uses the FCA's Multijet II from the Jeep Compass in a lower 140PS state of tune, the seven-seater will use the 173PS version from the Indian-spec Compass.

An automatic version is also being readied for the Harrier for launch next year and a similar arrangement will be made for the seven-seater. The Harrier currently uses the Compass' six-speed manual but with Tata's own tuning and clutch actuator.

The Harrier will also be continuously updated over the course of its life-cycle with small additions being made to the drivetrain, features and design.

Tata Harrier Review - Best Indian Car Ever | MotorBeam

The Tata Harrier was showcased as the H5X concept at the 2018 Auto Expo. This has been one of the most anticipated vehicles in the Indian market in 2018.

The Tata Harrier gets a Land Rover platform and is powered by Fiat's 2.0-litre diesel engine. It gets a 6-speed MT, but will also get a 6-speed AT in the near future.

The Tata Harrier looks dope and is a very promising SUV. The vehicle's price hasn't been revealed yet and it will be launched in January 2019.

The Tata Harrier will rival the Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass and Mahindra XUV500.

Tata Harrier launched in India

Tata Motors has launched the Harrier at a starting price of Rs. 12.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). It is available in four variants - XE, XM, XT and XZ.

The Tata Harrier is based on the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced (OMEGA) Architecture, which is derived from Land Rover's D8 platform.

The Harrier measures 4,598 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width and 1,706 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,741 mm and it offers a ground clearance of 205 mm. It has a 425-litre boot and the fuel tank capacity is 50 litres.

The Harrier's styling is based on Tata's Impact Design 2.0 design philosophy. It features slim LED DRLs and a dual-tone bumper with triangular pods that house the main headlamps and fog lamps. The bumper also has a silver scuff plate.

The SUV has flared wheel arches and a sloping roof line with blacked out B and C pillars. At the rear, the Harrier comes with slim wraparound tail lights and a dual-tone bumper with silver trim. It has a roof spoiler and a black insert between the tail lights.

The Harrier comes with dual-tone interiors with silver trim and a 7 / 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and features like voice recognition and SMS readout.

The SUV comes equipped with 6 / 9-speaker JBL audio system. It has a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel with a 7-inch colour TFT display instrument cluster.

Other features include 8-way adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, cruise control, engine start/stop button and reverse parking camera.

Powering the Harrier is a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 138 BHP @ 3,750 rpm and 350 Nm of torque @ 1,750-2,500 rpm.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and comes with three driving modes - Eco, City and Sport. The SUV also gets three Terrain Response Modes - Normal, Rough and Wet.

Some of the safety features offered on the Harrier include ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, ESP, 6 airbags, Hill Hold Control, Hill Descent Control, Roll Over Mitigation, Corner Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control, Brake Disc Wiping and ISOFIX child safety seat anchors.

The new Harrier is available in five colour options – Calisto Copper, Thermisto Gold, Ariel Silver, Telesto Grey and Orcus White.

Variant-wise ex-showroom prices:

XE - Rs. 12.69 lakh
XM - Rs. 13.75 lakh

Tata Harrier : Official Review - Team-BHP

The Tata Harrier is on sale in India at a price of between Rs. 12.70 - 16.26 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

What you'll like:

• Stunning looks & strong road presence. Solid build too
• Well-priced for the package on offer
• Classy, spacious cabin with comfortable seats & a chilling air-con
• Fantastic 9-speaker audio system. Sound quality & bass are enjoyable
• 2.0L diesel offers good driveability and a punchy mid-range
• 205 mm of ground clearance + terrain response system. Latter will make monsoon driving safer
• Topnotch safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP, break reminder, hill hold, brake disc wiping & more
• Features such as Eco & Sport modes, xenon projectors, auto headlamps & wipers, cruise control…

What you won't:

• Feels like a work-in-process beta version. Several rough areas are yet to be sorted out
• Concerns over niggles & long-term reliability. Our test cars had many problems
• Nervous steering at 100+ km/h…too light, too sensitive. Needs tuning
• Service visit every 6 months / 7500 km (12-months is the norm today)
• No automatic option in a market that loves ATs. No all-wheel drive for enthusiasts either
• Annoyances such as the massive ORVM blind spot, loud diesel >3000 rpm & some ergonomic flaws
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• Missing kit (auto-dimming IRVM, sunroof, usable center armrest & dead pedal, TPMS)

Measuring 4,598 mm in length, 1,894 mm in width and 1,706 mm in height, the Harrier is longer & wider than all other 5-seater rivals...and the 7-seater Mahindra XUV500! Its wheelbase of 2,741 mm is longer than that of the XUV500 as well.

Unfortunately, Tata's willpower to stick to a diet remains shaky. The vehicle's kerb weight of 1,675 kg makes it heavier than all other monocoque 5-seater rivals.

Coming to safety, the Harrier is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS + EBD, rear parking sensors, seat-belt reminders for the front seats and speed sensitive auto-door locking as standard. The top variant gets 6 airbags, ESP, ISOFIX child seat mounts and a reversing camera.

We would have liked TPMS and front parking sensors to be standard at this price point though.

While the Harrier has not been crash tested by independent entities like the NCAP, the Land Rover Discovery Sport has received a 5-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test. Besides, in 2018, the smaller Tata Nexon got a 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP too.

We expect no less from the Harrier & hear that Tata's management has pushed for the topmost NCAP rating for this car.

Tata is offering a standard warranty of 2 years / unlimited km, which can be extended to 4 years / 130,000 km. We strongly recommend this warranty extension as brand-new Tata cars are known to suffer niggles.

Heck, both our test Harriers had multiple problems!

We're disappointed that the warranty cannot be extended to 5 years as that's pretty much the industry standard now (some manufacturers offer coverage for up to 7 years!).

MG Hector vs Tata Harrier | Comparison Test Review | Autocar India

The MG Hector has proven to be hugely popular since its launch in early June, racking up over 28,000 bookings. It does, however, have a very strong rival in the Tata Harrier, which has built its own vast fan following.

In fact, the two are incredibly similar on paper - five seats, front-wheel drive, manual gearbox - they even use the same engine, and their prices are really close.

But which one should you pick? Gavin D'Souza drives them to find out.

Beautiful car all round, with a decent cabin. But the "wood" inserts on the dash aren't going to be everyone's fav.

Tata Harrier petrol coming soon - Autocar India
Harrier petrol will debut Tata’s new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine; 7-seat Gravitas will get the engine next.

1583486951097.png

You read about the Tata Harrier petrol first on Autocar India and we can now reveal that the final product will come sometime before the festive season. The Harrier petrol will come powered by Tata’s new 1.5-litre, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine.

Basically a four-cylinder version of the 1.2 Revotron turbo found under the bonnet of the Nexon, the engine is likely to put out power in excess of 150hp.

“We’ve always had the four-cylinder version of this engine in mind,” says Rajendra Petkar, chief technology officer, Tata Motors. “And with 65-70 percent of Nexon sales now going to a petrol, this is the next step”.

The arrival of the Harrier petrol will open up the Tata SUV to a whole new set of buyers.

The sales breakup of the Harrier’s closest rival, the MG Hector, sure points at the additional numbers a petrol version could bring in. Of the 19,060 Hectors sold in the July 2019-January 2020 period, 10,448 were petrols (including 2,468 hybrids), with diesels making up the remaining 8,612 sales.

The Harrier that was launched in diesel-manual form only has been averaging 1,226 units since January 2019.

A new diesel-automatic should help sales but the bigger bump could be courtesy the upcoming petrol. The 7-seat derivative of the Harrier, the Tata Gravitas, will also sport the same engine.

As with the Nexon unit, this new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will come with drive modes. Tata will also have an automatic version of the Harrier and Gravitas petrol available at a later stage – it’ll come with paddle shifters and there’s even the possibility of a ‘Sport’ mode. Smooth progression and improved fuel efficiency will be the biggest challenges for Tata.

looks like a copy of a Land Rover Defender done badly.

From Post # 3 above:

The Harrier will share a significant amount under the skin with current Land Rover models, showing Tata’s push upmarket from its budget roots.

It sits on the brand’s Omega modular architecture, which is a version of Land Rover’s D8 platform adapted to suit Indian road conditions.

The D8 platform underpins the current Range Rover Evoque, seven-seat Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jaguar E-Pace SUVs.
