Passage through India: Negotiating Mumbai in a Tata Harrier

The Harrier gives JLR hardware a Tata twist, but how will it fare on India's four-lane roads crammed with twice as many cars and bicycles (often driving the wrong way)?

2020 Tata Harrier Automatic : Official Review - Team-BHP

The Tata Harrier Automatic is on sale in India at a price of between Rs. 13.84 - 20.30 lakhs (ex-showroom).

What you'll like:

Smooth & competent 6-speed automatic transmission
• Far improved over the 2019 work-in-progress Harrier beta
• Stunning looks & strong road presence. Solid build too
• Classy, spacious cabin with comfortable seats & a chilling air-con
• Fantastic 9-speaker audio system. Sound quality & bass are enjoyable
• The Harrier's 2.0L diesel now gets 30 BHP more & offers good performance
• 205 mm of ground clearance + terrain response system. Latter will make monsoon driving safer
• Topnotch safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP, break reminder, hill hold, brake disc wiping & more
• Features such as the panoramic sunroof, Eco & Sport modes, auto headlamps & wipers, cruise control…

What you won't:

• Heavy steering gets cumbersome at parking / u-turn / crawling speeds (<5 km/h)
Harrier AT’s focus is on smoothness & comfort; gearbox is not the most responsive
• Concerns over niggles & long-term reliability associated with Tata cars
• Service visit every 6 months / 7,500 km (12-months is the norm today)
• Diesel engine does get loud at 3,500 rpm & its engine note is quite sad too
No petrol option (almost all competitors offer it). No AWD for enthusiasts either
• Although improved, the Harrier's steering @ 120 km/h is still a level too sensitive
• Price has increased by ~1.5 lakhs ex-showroom since launch. Unwise for a slow-seller
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble

New Tata Safari revealed ... and it’s a Discovery Sport underneath!

The new Tata Safari seven-seater SUV has been revealed, with the Indian firm basing the newcomer on the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Of course, Jaguar Land Rover has been a subsidiary of Tata Motors since 2008, which explains the component sharing.

Riding on an architecture “derived from the renowned D8 platform from Land Rover”, the new Safari arrives as a three-row option, just like the aforementioned Discovery Sport.

It will be built in Pune and is described as the brand’s “flagship offering”, slotting in above the Harrier. It is the second generation of the Safari nameplate, with the first having arrived back in 1998.

From what we understand, the Safari will debut with a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine offering around 125 kW, delivered via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a torque-converter automatic transmission with the same number of cogs.

Tata Motors unveils the all-new Safari (in India) - Team-BHP

1611722861518.png

Tata Motors has unveiled the all-new Safari. The SUV will be available in 6 variants - XE, XM, XT, XT+, XZ and XZ+.

The new Safari is based on the OMEGARC platform that is shared with the Harrier. It features Tata's latest Impact 2.0 design.

The car gets a familiar front fascia which is identical to the Harrier, however it gets a few embellishments like chrome inserts on the grille that help differentiate it.

The grille is flanked by slim LED daytime running lights, while the main headlamp clusters are positioned lower down on the front bumper. It gets projector headlamps as standard, while 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels are offered on higher variants.

2021 Tata Safari Review - Team-BHP

Tata Safari Pros:

• The iconic brand “Safari” is back! We agree with using the legendary nameplate for this car
• Stunning looks & strong road presence. Solid build too
• Classy, spacious cabin with comfortable seats & a chilling air-con
• Extra 3rd row of seats brings lots more practicality & utility
• Superb captain chairs available as an option for the middle row (top variant only)
• Extras over the Harrier include rear disc brakes, TPMS, e-parking brake, auto-hold, boss mode…

• Fantastic 9-speaker audio system. Sound quality & bass are enjoyable
• 168 BHP 2.0L diesel offers good driveability and a punchy mid-range
Smooth & competent 6-speed automatic transmission
• Sufficient ground clearance + terrain response system for rough and wet roads
• Topnotch safety kit includes 6 airbags, ESP, rest break reminder, hill hold, brake disc wiping & more
• Features such as the panoramic sunroof, Eco & Sport modes, auto headlamps & wipers, cruise control…

Tata Safari Cons:

• Heavy steering gets cumbersome at parking / u-turn / crawling speeds (<5 km/h)
• 3rd row access is too difficult in the captain seat variant
• Negligible boot space with all the seats up - a paltry 73 liters
• Safari AT’s focus is on smoothness & comfort; gearbox is not the most responsive
• Concerns over niggles & long-term reliability. Our test car had a problem too!
• Service visit every 6 months / 7,500 km (12-months is the norm today)
• Diesel engine does get loud above 3,500 rpm & its engine note is quite sad too
• No petrol option (almost all competitors offer it). No AWD for enthusiasts either
• Although improved, the Safari's steering @ 120 km/h is still a level too sensitive
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• By 2021 standards, we’d expect wireless charging + front / 360 camera + ventilated seats
• We don’t agree with the excessive chrome (outside), impractical white interiors & 18” rims (firmer ride)
