Tatjana Schoenmaker scooped SA’s first gold medal of the Tokyo Games as she won the women’s 200m breaststroke in a world record on Friday morning.

Schoenmaker screamed with delight when she caught sight of her 2 minute 18.95 second mark, the first individual world record of this gala. and wept with joy as she was congratulated by the American silver and bronze medallists, Lilly King and Annie Lazor, and her fifth-placed Tuks teammate Kaylene Corbett.

This is brilliant. I was worried that she was pushing too hard with the Olympic records in the qualifying rounds.

Its his third Games. Olympic swimming is for the late teens and early 20's. The closer you get to 30s the slower you get in the pool apparently.

This is going to be one of the images of the Olympics I reckon. Not only her joy, but her peers celebrating her achievement as well. Credit to America's Lilly King, she swam under WR time as well, but just not fast enough.
