Uber and Bolt drivers allegedly shot at, cars torched in Soweto

At least two people have been injured in what appears to be violence between taxi drivers and ride-hailing service contractors with Uber, Bolt, or both.

The attacks reportedly occurred at Maponya Mall in Soweto, with bystanders reporting that taxi drivers were responsible for the violence.

This taxi vs Uber/Bolt fascinates me... mainly because your typical Uber/Bolt passenger, is NOT your typical taxi passenger.

There may be some overlap, but generally I don't think so. Most of the people I know that take Uber or Bolt, would not otherwise have taken a taxi.

It appears that the taxi industry is already a mafia, with gang wars, the like. Why do they target these people? Money. Do they have any morsel of dignity? Nope. They will kill for money, and setting a example to others, striking fear into people. What if children was involved? They don't forget anything like that.

I was scared for my life when I took a trip into the centre of Pretoria with a Uber driver the other day, with the taxi gangmembers walking openly with a pipe, stick on the streets.

I took a gautrain trip from ORT to Hatfield last year and then needed an Uber ride to my final destination in PTA. Had to walk about two blocks away from the station to get into the uber. Sketchy AF

Its time we suspend all new taxi licenses in conflict areas. Lets teach those thugs a lesson. Perhaps as citizens we should get some sticks and show those taxi guys who is boss.

Money drying up. They will kill to get the last of what is left. This is SA.

Every day there are lovelier and lovelier stories to tell in this s**thole.
