Now, that is a new excuse to use for poor on-line order deliveries!

Really? So how do they claim this subsidy you speak of?

Probably fuel slips, which is why you sometimes see (more often closer to the township areas) one driver collecting a stack of slips from petrol stations close to month end. From what I heard previously (from a petrol station owner we did an networking job for) the taxi bosses use those slips to artificially inflate their expenses to minimize the tax they pay on what little revenue they declare for their profit. Slips are real, so doubt sars auditors are going to spend a few hours checking cctv footage to make sure that it was a taxi that filled up petrol for the corresponding slip.

Which is just tax fraud, not a subsidy.

Subsidy is just a form of cash return discount, so maybe presenting slips at month end to whichever department gets them a rebate back from government which is the form of subsidy. One slip for two purposes. Doubt the petrol stations have an actual proactive system for split pricing to charge taxis one price and other motorists a different price, if the taxis do get a subsidy its probably a reactively claimed back from government

Nope, @Sinbad is right, what those taxi owners are doing by collecting additional slips to inflate their expenses reported is merely tax fraud.

There is no fuel subsidy for the taxi industry in this country, its an urban legend.

Well I did say "probably" originally, and then provided a possible explanation. I didn't mean it was a concrete implementation according to a government gazette. If there is no subsidy then there is no subsidy, but if there was some type of subsidy then petrol slips for a rebate would be the mechanism I would think of.

Yeah, it would be a mechanism that would potentially work if there was a subsidy...

Apologies, the last statement in my post wasn't actually directed at you, more at Gazg for believing the urban legend that taxi's get a fuel subsidy.

It's not so much subsidized but rather taxis doing whatever the **** they want as usual. e.g.

taxis act like the mob sometimes, got enforcers, territory, get dues
even have shootouts and wars with rivals,

no wonder we left far far behind the rest of the world when it comes to new tech.
might as well get the oxen cart out and go to the shops.
