taxis act like the mob sometimes, got enforcers, territory, get dues
even have shootouts and wars with rivals,

no wonder we left far far behind the rest of the world when it comes to new tech.
might as well get the oxen cart out and go to the shops.

I'm intrigued... how do you go from the Taxi's and their mafia and wars and link that to us being far behind the rest of the world when it comes to new tech (though I'm also interested what aspects of new tech you mean by that)
