Of the 36 daily deaths on South Africa's roads, an average of three are killed in taxi-related incidents - translating into 1 095 deaths every year.

And according to a study by the Automobile Association of South Africa, around 70 000 minibus taxi crashes happen each year - double the number of accidents involving other motor vehicles.

AA spokesperson Gary Ronald said that the reason taxi drivers behaved badly was because law enforcement had failed.

They should be removed off our roads. Let them strike, call in the army once and for all and teach them the lesson that they do not own the roads or the country.

I myself have been almost killed by taxis on numerous occasions. What they especially love to do near where I live is drive on the wrong side of a bendy road so you can't even see them coming. Then when you honk at them you often get a one finger salute, like its their right to drive there. I think it's absolutely crazy that the government does nothing about this. Just what is it that they do exactly? They don't control the taxis, they don't fix the roads, they don't maintain the hospitals, they make ridiculous statements about the state of affairs and ignore South Africans being tortured to death in their own homes. I really hope this election changes something, otherwise I'm off. I've had it with reading about people being set alight or burnt with irons and the state defending these fcking sickos.

Taxis don't deserve to be on the road.

Interesting stats...

An average of 3 out of 36.

Let's see...Most taxis are on the road from 04h00 to 21h00 ALL THE TIME.They always have a load of about 15 people, some even overload.Almost none of them wear safety belts.

Other motor vehicles are on the road, one trip in the morning, one trip in the afternoon, plus the ocassional 1 or 2 trips in between. They carry a load of 1-4 people.

Logic tells me "the other motor vehicles" should be responsible for the 3 out of 36.I would be worried about the 33.

It's worrying that half the number of crashes is involved in the overwhelming majority of deaths...even if there is less people involved in those crashes.

Take your taxes. Put in back pocket. Maybe put some in Mugabe's pocket.

Rubbish. They carry full loads at peak times only, I guarantee you no taxi is overloaded at 5 in the morning - they're lucky if they run half full at that time, same after 7pm and during working hours. Those stats don't take into account accidents that taxis cause without being involved in, and obviously only counts reported incidents.
SA drivers in general are reckless and irresponsible and the taxi drivers have taken this attitude to the extreme.

Metro police are jumping up and down and pointing at their new points system as the sure solution. Big deal, so taxi driver gets his license suspended, doesn't pay a cent in fines, buys new license. Rinse and repeat.
It's time to introduce community service in this country, particularly where road offences are concerned. Stop lining Metro pig pockets with cash and let's see some taxi drivers picking road litter, clearing accident debris, trimming roadside grass and hedges...

Just had a run in with one of these... swerved directly in front of me, I hit the brakes, ABS going mad, nowhere to turn cause I'm in the left lane on a bridge. Manage to just avoid him, so pulled around and promptly returned the favour. Result, one broken taxi wheel on the pavement... Do I feel bad? Not a bit. If you want to drive like a prick, you should be treated like one.

Awesome sparky...

I've started doing the same to these monkeys... know that I've caused at least 2 taxis to ramp the pavements because they've had nowhere else to go.
