just a thought, is a person allowed to make a citizens arrest against a taxi driver or does citizens arrest actually exist?

Here's a thought, are you crazy? With passengers throwing a motorbike onto a metro trying to pull 'em over what you think they will do to a 'citizen' ?

Just had a run in with one of these... swerved directly in front of me, I hit the brakes, ABS going mad, nowhere to turn cause I'm in the left lane on a bridge. Manage to just avoid him, so pulled around and promptly returned the favour. Result, one broken taxi wheel on the pavement... Do I feel bad? Not a bit. If you want to drive like a prick, you should be treated like one.

I've been thinking of getting a nice old hard body or something that I won't mind being rear ended.

you are, but the question is are you going to live to tell the tale ?

my thought is someting more than paper; can't remember the word for it but its when you force a acting/goverment body to do something via court order.

there is always a street protest with handing over demands, but i fear that will not heed enough result due to the fact that we are not going to go bonkers and burn-n-brake stuff down....

I dont think we could just say lets get rid of all the taxis, a lot of people depend on them as a the only means of transport, without them, there are going to be a lot of people who cannot get to work or wherever it is they want to go.

I do however think, taxis and other vehicles transporting members of the public for a fee must be fined higher then private vehicles for breaking the law.
E.g taxis caught speeding and if they are carrying passengers, double or triple the fine of a normal motorist. Additionally x number of offences must result in that operators licence being revoked and vehicle being impounded for 6 months. Also roadworthy tests must be done every three months etc.

problem there is enforcement its been given the slip so that it has become their right to do wtf they just want to do.

/sigh, metro has to be forced to do something actively otherwise nothing will come of it i fear.

lovely. as i stated earlier we witnessed in the matter of about 15 mins, two seperate taxis go through red lights as if they were green lights.

That is nothing I went into town [JHB CDB] ,on my way to Fordsburg, I witnessed minimum 50 Taxi's jump red robots. It is terrible, I wouldn't mind so much if jumping red robots was the only thing they do. But I also got cut off by 2 taxi's on the same stretch of road in the course of 5 minutes

The only way higher fines would work (assuming the cops aren't corrupt and take a bribe) is to impound the taxi until the fine is settled in full.

If its not settled with 21 days, the taxi gets crushed and sold as scrap metal.

Interesting stats...

An average of 3 out of 36.

Logic tells me "the other motor vehicles" should be responsible for the 3 out of 36.I would be worried about the 33.

Not really because about 17 of those are caused by pedestrians. The remaining 16 are contributed by the rest with buses being the lead there.

I had a run-in with a whole bunch of them on Church St heading from Silverton, where the road becomes one lane. The AHs were using the emergency lane as usual and then forcing their way back into the traffic when the emergency lane ended. I tried the trick of driving half into the emergency lane, but then the buggers behind you try to sneak into the gap you leave on the right. What the one who tried it didn't realise is that I have steps on my bakkie which extend quite a way from the body. I ended up with a bit of a mark from his side mirror, but he ended up with a largish ding in his door.

I hate it with an absolute passion, when the media use "allegedly" in cases like this

That story is so dodge. It says that the family of the girl that got killed, looked visibly pleased that the taxi driver was released on bail????!!!! LIEZ

It says:

Matji’s family, seated in one of the front rows of the court gallery, looked visibly pleased that bail had been granted

That's the family of the taxi driver

Have to agree with you - that he killed her is not being denied and it is true that she was killed by him. Nothing alledged at all. If they had said 'alledgedly murdered by..' it may have been acceptable.

But this is bad journalism, writing and editing.
