In the words of homer simpson "Doooo" my apologies, should open my eyes. but was just so angry at the fact that he is out on R1000 bail!

Seems rather trivial doesn't it? But I suppose that if the guy hangs around and is tried, the amount of bail is irrelevant. It isn't about the seriousness of the crime as much as the flight risk of the individual.

How do you figure he isn't a flight risk?

In regards to bail amounts, especially on crimes like these

It isn't about the seriousness of the crime as much as the flight risk of the individual.

Usually i read it as: "Estimated Rand value of life"

I wonder if he runs away, never to be seen again, does the court apologize to the family and give them that R1000 in compensation?

How about the other R250 they got off the taxi driver for not having a valid drivers license? Perhaps another apology for allowing him back on the road?

 these kind of things make me so angry.

No - bail money is forfeited to the state.

The law has no way of knowing whether someone it has fined for not having a license is going to kill anyone.

And before this discussion gets a little silly - I am not defending the driver, I don't agree with small bail amount. I only answered some points that had been raised.

Of the 36 daily deaths on South Africa's roads, an average of three are killed in taxi-related incidents - translating into 1 095 deaths every year.

so has anyone found out who is killing the other 33/36? im sure we would be better served if we deal with the perpetrator of the 90% of the deaths, dont u think...?

According to Drive Alive half the deaths are pedestrian caused. Buses cull a bunch more and then the rest. Go to their site and follow the links for a full report.

So a taxi hopping up onto the pavement and killing someone would be a minibus caused death. A person stepping in front of a minibus would be a pedestrian caused death.

My questions raised (hypothetical btw) were meant to invoke a feeling of sarcasm, but thanks for clearing it all up :D

Another Bay man run down by taxi

Mthetho Ndoni, Khanyi Ndabeni and Nomahlubi Sonjica HERALD REPORTERS

AS anger against reckless taxi drivers in Nelson Mandela Bay continues, another man is in a critical condition in hospital after being run down by a taxi.

Mzimkhulu Socenywa, 39, of Kwazakhele, was seriously injured after he was knocked down and dragged five metres – allegedly by a drunk and unlicensed taxi driver in Njoli Square on Friday.

He lay waiting for help for more than an hour after police failed to respond to three calls from his family.

My new car will definitely have a towbar and bull bars front and back.
Don't care how crap it looks, its going to save me money.

And next time that taxi pushes in front of me @80km/h only to try stop and pick up people, he's going to climb a curb and hug a pole.... with a little push :D
