Not sure if I should ask here or in the Cellphone forums. I have a Samsung Galaxy S (original firmware 2.3.3) and every since I ported my number from Vodacom to CellC, my Gtalk have connection issues.

I open Gtalk and it struggles to connect at times (not always, but a lot more than usual). If my cell goes into standby and I turn it on and then Gtalk is not connected. When I was with Vodacom I did not have this problem. If I connect to Wi-Fi I do not have this problem (even from standby mode).

Other apps seems ok, but there are times where I have to disable the data connection and re-enable for any apps to connect to the internet via CellC. With Wi-Fi I do not have any issues.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Edit: Cape Town area (Durbanville, Parow, Stellenbosch, Gordons Bay)

Have you set the APN for the mobile network to the Cell C settings as they are different to the ones from Voda?

I have been having many "network errors" lately on my Defy. WhatsApp messages hangs a long time before going through. Happened a few times now also where my Gmail app says "Connection Lost" or something like that. When I go into the market it also gives a network error and tells me to try again later. Switching from EDGE to 3G or other way round normally sorted this out...but like now nothing works....not EDGE or 3G. I never used to have this problem..it started about a week ago. It is not lekker.

Maybe this is what is causing your issues?

@ocleroux - Are using a ported number? Just wondering if this is because I'm using a ported number, that I have these issues.

Gmail Push Moto Defy (Cell C RBM)

Howzit guys. Any of you here with the Moto Defy on Cell C RBM that is having probs with gmail push? Mine is taking about 40 - 60 minutes ... somtimes even longer... to come through. I have tried everything now...background data is enabled...battery and data saving mode is off. I have tried the "Email" app with the same results. I have removed and then added my gmail account...nothing seems to work. It is very frustrating.

Ginggs....you have any advice? Is yours working probperly? This has been a ongoing problem and I just dont know what to do anymore. :crying:

The only thing that sorts it out is to use my gmail with corp sync but this drains my battery like no ones business.

I don't have a Moto Defy, but I've done quite a bit of testing in the past with fwd'ing e-mails between Gmail & other accounts.

Why not set up a Windows Hotmail (http://explore.live.com/windows-live-hotmail) or even Yahoo account, then have your Gmail forward to that new e-mail address ;
then put the new relevant Hotmail/Yahoo accounts settings into your phone, and see if mail comes through faster that way. Think you can have 25 Gigs storage in Hotmail/WinLive.

A bit of a diversion, but if your Gmail goes through to the other account quickly, you should get it to your phone assuming settings are correct.

If this doesn't work (I'm no expert), it's then probably something wrong with the phone or Cell C / RBM.

Tried the Yahoo forwarding thing last night. Seemed to work but this morning it also bombed out like gmail has been doing. Also Yahoo you have to pay to have access to pop to use a email client on your computer. That already p*ssed me off big time.

Seeing as you seem to be out of options, what about trying it with Hotmail / WinLive.

I have set up one of those Hotmail accounts before (never Yahoo), and have any mail (very rare) coming into that @live.com account fw'ded to my Gmail a/c via POP on computer.
Far as I know there's absolutely no charge to do so, and mail seems to make its way in very quickly.

I have a Defy and I've had no issues with it whatsoever. It's actually better than on my browser. Ie. I get the mail notification on my phone before it appears in the browser. No other weird or odd settings. All I do is open the gmail app and press the home button at the bottom (I don't sign out of the gmail account when I exit). I'm sure you pro'ly already know/do that, but still decided to mention it...you never know, right? ;)

Good Day ocleroux

Try wiping your Android, first back up, then do a factory reset.
Set up your gmail again and lets see, test it here and all seems fine.

Almost two weeks later and still no proper feedback as to what might be the problem. It looks like with ported numbers, the 3G connection does not stay connected unless you use the phone all the time. Sometimes I still need to disconnect my data connection, reconnect before I can use the data connection again.

I tried putting a Vodacom SIM in my phone this morning and it appears to have fixed the problem, so I think it might be Cell C problem.

On the google forums a lot of people are complaining from different providers. The problem only appears on my phone when I'm on Cell C's network, if I use Wi-Fi then I don't have a problem. Also it appears that the issue only started with firmware 2.3.3. So what is different with 2.3.3 that this issue appear on certain providers network and what is different between the providers' setup.

Cell C breaking my Android Push Service (tested and confirmed by me)

Hello Cell_C. I would like to bring the following to your attention please.

Ever since I got my RBM Motorola Defy my push service has not worked. My Gmail and WhatsApp messages are delayed by 30 minutes or more 99% of the time. It will only come through when I actively start using the phone after it has been lying idle.

I have been pulling my hair out regarding this. I have created threads in the Android section of mybb. I have asked for help in the Motorola Support Forums. I have asked for help on the Google Mobile Support forums. No one has been able to help.

Yesterday someone mentioned in the Android forums that all of his friends on Cell C have also been having lots of problems with WhatsApp message delays, whereas all his contacts on WhatsApp that is on Vodacom is working 100% (except when the WhatsApp server is down)

I decided to put this to the test. This morning I got myself a Vodacom prepaid sim...activated it and put some airtime on it. I got the Vodacom internet settings on my Defy and fired it up. What do you know....now my push service works 100% for the first time since I got this phone!!! I have left my phone lying idle for 60 minutes now...just sent a test email....within 3 seconds it came through beautifully.

Why is Cell C putting our phones internet connections to sleep when we are not using the phone?????? This is basically rendering the services that we all have come to love useless. I do not want to wonder if I am getting my messages and email or not. I can not describe it to you how irritating it is when I pick up my phone to check something and then a WhatsApp message comes through and it says it was sent 40 minutes ago! That is not COOL!

Here is the related thread I mentioned earlier where someone gave me a headsup on the fact that Cell C could very well be the culprit regarding this matter.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/356150-Keeping-your-data-connection-active-on-the-network

And before anyone asks...no I did not change any of the phones settings such as syncing etc etc. The only things that changed was the Vodacom sim that was inserted and the Vodacom internet settings that got sent to my phone automatically.

Can everyone that is having similar problems on their Android devices please post here so that Cell_C can get a good picture of who is affected etc etc.

PS: This is not location related. It happens everywhere I go. I have also tested it on 2G and 3G. Nothing helps while my Cell C sim card is in the phone!

Please Cell_C.....I have signed a two year contract with you guys and am now only in month 3 or 4. This needs to be resolved please.
