A Sans Souci Girls’ High School teacher who slapped a learner will be allowed to return to her post.

The school governing body has decided to give Clarisa Venter a fine and a warning.

Venter and the grade nine learner were both suspended after a video showed them in an altercation in a full classroom in February.

Education MEC spokesperson Jessica Shelver said the school's governing body has ratified its decision regarding Venter: “The teacher should receive a fine, a final written warning and has taken anger management sessions.”

Venter will be allowed to return to the classroom when the second term starts on 2 April.

However, she still has to appear in court in April on a charge of assault, brought by the learner’s mother.

The 16-year-old girl is also expected back in court to face an assault charge brought by the teacher.

Her mother has removed her from the school.

#SansSouci teacher in slap video will return to school in April

Cape Town - The Sans Souci Girls’ High teacher who slapped a pupil in class will return to work on Tuesday, 2 April.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Jessica Shelver confirmed that after a disciplinary hearing, Sans Souci’s school governing body (SGB) decided to give Clarissa Venter a fine and a final warning.

The 34-year-old teacher, who was appointed by the SGB and not the WCED, also has to attend anger management classes.

On 5 February, the Afrikaans teacher was recorded on video having a verbal altercation with the girl over a book.

The girl shoved a desk into Venter, who took her cellphone away, and she slapped the pupil.

Mom of 'slapped' Sans Souci pupil lodges R150 000 Equality Court claim

Cape Town – A claim has been lodged in the Equality Court for damages amounting to R150 000 by the mother of a former Grade 9 Sans Souci Girls' High School pupil who was allegedly slapped by her Afrikaans teacher at the beginning of last month.

Attorney William Booth, who acts on behalf of teacher Clarissa Venter, 34, said in a statement that his office had filed opposing papers objecting to the claim.

Booth said the pupil's mother "has also claimed that our client allegedly assaulted (the pupil) due to her daughter being of a different race and cultural background", but that the incident was "clearly" not a result of racism or cultural discrimination on the part of Venter.

"This appears to be nothing more than a vexatious attempt to obtain financial gain as a result of an incident which was in fact instigated by (the pupil's) lack of discipline, unruly behaviour and extreme provocative conduct. We are therefore of the opinion that this claim has no legal basis and should be dismissed."

On February 5, the Afrikaans teacher was recorded on video having a verbal altercation in class with the pupil over a book, which led to her seemingly being shoved and then allegedly slapping the pupil.

The Sans Souci school governing body fined Venter and she received a final warning. She will return to the classroom on April 2.

Booth told EWN on Friday Venter was found not guilty of assault and that it's counselling and not anger management sessions she must attend, as had been reported.
