Tech salaries in South Africa vs Silicon Valley

“Web Developer” - did someone get their job categories from the 1990s?

Both the SA and Silicon Valley total comp for software engineers are from about 20 years ago. Indeed and pay scale are utterly useless, especially if used incorrectly (“Software Engineer” returns their data for junior engineers, not the profession).

South African tech salaries vs the world's tech powerhouse

South African techies can earn significantly higher salaries in a job in the global centre for high technology and innovation, California's Silicon Valley, than they would locally.

However, housing and living costs in the area are notoriously high.
Thats depressing, but thats usually the case when comparing any salary locally with one abroad.

Tech salaries and opportunities abroad look really, really good... I am drooling! The thought of working with some incredible people abroad really tickles me fancy! Also interesting to see the U.S Federal and State level income tax splits. The U.S is innovation hub of the world, so I would expect salaries and opportunities there to be superb! If I was working in the U.S, I might not want to return to ZAF full-time, haha.

In my opinion, South African companies don't pay engineers well. You have to threaten to leave or jump ship every couple of years to earn a good salary. Blindly sit too long at a SA company and you will see your salary fall 50%+ below the market average - this happened to me. R413K for an engineer with some experience (1+ years I would say) is on the low to underpaid region. For an engineer with no experience, that seems like decent money.

Those SA salaries look a bit on the low side

Yeah, either the source of salary information is completely borked, or being a software dev is no longer worth while in SA.

Nah, this article is a classic. It's been republished by Mybroadband in various forms probably over 20 times the last decade. Just go with it...

They should probably update their data since the first publication though…

Yeah, but then you’d have to live in California.
Or New York, or Chicago, or Austin, or Seattle, etc. The big companies have large (or even head) offices elsewhere, and pay similarly. There are local companies in these areas that bring the average down, but it’s a very bimodal distribution.

For reference, these are the salaries for the equivalent of Shell Ultra City (on steroids):
