Technical question: web server + adsl

I was wondering if any of the more technically savvy out there could answer a quick question for me:

If I install what would essetnially constitute a (Linux) web server at an ISP for hosting some of my client's sites, could I use the same server for ADSL connectivity.

I'm thinking that there should, in theory, be a way of getting that server to provide my ADSL bandwidth rather than my exisiting ISP (who horror of all horrors appear to want to sell out to those ****ers at Telkom).

On second thoughts, there may be all kinds of DSLAM stuff and ports and *** just to make it difficult/impossible to do such a thing economically.

i dont fully understand your question but you will be able to run a proxy server/VPN to circumvent capping ...

Thanks loosecannon

Perhaps I should rephrase. At the moment I pay Telkom for ADSL and Tiscali for, um, I'm not entirely sure. As I understand it, the bandwidth is actually provided by Telkom and Tiscali are more or less routing agents. (There is something in my understanding which is not entirely sound here).

So my question is the following. If I have my own server at an ISP can I route my connectivity directly through this server rather than Tiscali to provide the connectivity? I'm actually trying to do the maths from a business model perspective and wanted to know if it is possible to bin Tiscali in favour of my own server which provides not only web server space for my clients but has an additional function of replacing Tiscali as an ISP.

Running a proxy server to bypass capping is one thing, but does that mean I can lose Tiscali entirely?

Whatever service provider you use, remember that they're just providing a supposed value-added service on top of the Telkom infrastructure. So, putting a box at an ISP still amounts to nothing more than the provision of a co-location service at a charge, if I understand correctly what you're trying to achieve. Of course, you'd be able to do what you want on your box (depending on arrangements with your ISP), but you'll still have to pay the ISP for the 'ADSL service connection' to it, and Telkrap for the ADSL line...
