So I've been looking into teeth whitening and the two types of teeth whitening I have found in SA are britesmile and BEYOND(tm) WhiteSpa. The former costs 4 to 5k in SA and the latter is apparently 1.6k.

Any dentists or clued up individuals care to comment or offer advice? How do they compare to each other?

Assuming they are more or less equally effective and safe then the cheaper one is obviously preferable.

We have a friend who is a dental technician and he has one of those little handheld machines that uses an ultraviolet light to interact with some liquid/paste to whiten your teeth and his wife uses the gum guard type one and he says both work.

Hydrogen peroxide is also supposed to work over time.

Anybody know if you can buy those DIY teeth whitening kits like they have in the USA? Would like to give one a try, if it's not too expensive of course.

A few years back my daughter brought over a product similar to this. The strips have a gel on them and you put it on your teeth but I found they slip and slide around too much and after a while I lost interest.

I think we are going to the dental guy tonight and if the white light machine is there I will take a picture and get some more info to post here.

Ryan, what I can tell you from my experience is that all the competitors to Britesmile, at least all the ones I know, and also WhiteSpa, is basically one of the numerous copies of the original Britesmile. The major difference is that non professional assistants simply guide you through the procedure, you have to apply the whitening gel yourself, they are not allowed to do it for you and this way they make sure not to be responsible for any complications that may occur. They are no dentists nor oral hygienists.

I am not saying it doesn't work but Britesmile is my trusted teeth whitening procedure, I am taken care of by a professional and the results are amazing. You just get what you pay for. Furthermore, you get a nice after care kit to ensure long lasting white smile. When I get it done the oral hygienist performs a dental hygiene as well, I am not sure but I think it is included in the price as well. I recommend you talk to a BriteSmile dentist before you decide.

Cool. I'll check out DisChem this Friday and give them a try. Will let you guys know if they work or not :)

There bound to be others there too because he did say his wife uses the gum guard version and that also does work.

All those whitening systems work to a certain extent but only the professional ones will get your teeth back to your natural white. No system can make your teeth whiter than your natural white, just for the record.

I'm in touch with an Oral Hygienist, and the prices quoted are
1) R4200 for the full britesmile procedure
This includes:
a polish of the teeth if necessary to remove staining
4 x 20min bleaching procedures
A Britesmile toothpaste
A Britesmile mouthwash
And a year's supply of maintenance with either bleaching trays (to be done 1/month) or bleaching pens (to be done 1/week).
The whole procedure takes about 2 to 2 1/2hours.

2) Opalescence Home bleaching – R 2000
"Opalescence home bleach is when I take moulds of your teeth and have bleaching trays made that fit your mouth snuggly.
You will then bleach them for about 2 weeks to get the final shade. This takes discipline but is very successful."

3) One hour In-chair DASH boost followed up with Opalescence home bleaching – R2800
"The combo is similar to home bleaching but I boost you in the chair with about 5 shades and then you only have to home bleach for about a week. A good option as well. I use 2 products – Opalescence and DASH. If you want to review it on the internet"

edit: I'm leaning towards option 3. Not sure if it's necessary to go full on white as naturally possible as it might look weird or be too noticeable? Although what do I care if people notice how pearly white my teeth are... Anony-mousse, your thoughts on that?

Option number 1 is without a doubt the best option, however, if you want to save some money then option number 3 is definitely acceptable. The procedure is done by a dentist and Opalescence is a very good quality brand. I am using some of their products myself. If you are not too sensitive to the whitening gel try to go for the 35% take home whitening gel. Can be a bit painful if you get it on your gum but the results are very good.

I had the Britesmile done not too long ago. I think it was about 80minutes total. It really worked. The difference was huge! However, it was the most pain I have ever been in in my life. The first 20 minutes were fine. But then you start feelings these incredibly painful "zaps" shooting through your teeth. Like someone is stinging them with electricity. They happen more and more often. The pain lasts for quite a few hours after the procedure. Looking back I am glad I had it done, though. My teeth are white and I have gained a lot of self confidence. But ja, it HURTS.
