I was rather disappointed in the response that the Slashdot posting got the other day, so I asked a few questions from fellow slashdotters about how they think SA broadband compares - There were some interesting answers.

Here's the post: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/06/1858243

The reply from Brazil makes for a good comparison with SA :
" Here in Brazil, at least in the state that I live in, the defacto monopolistic telco is actually nice to us ADSL users:

300kbps with 10Gb limit for about R$ 60, US$ 20-ish
600kbps with 15Gb limit for about R$ 100, US$ 30-ish
1Mbps with 20Gb limit for about R$ 170, US$ 60-ish

The service, in my case at least, doesn't suck.

I'm actually happy with the service they offer - ignoring the ****** spammers that scan my firewall every 0.0001 seconds for an open relay, it's not a bad service, IMVHO. "

Also, the cost of living - an American paying $60 in the US for something is differnent to something here costing $60. Cost of cars, gas (petrol), consumer electronics and the internet is cheaper relative to their salaries, at least by my own personal comparison to my own profession when I was in the States in June.
