Some Telkom Media Jerk said:
ue to the importance attached to convergence and the interest of many people unable to attend the conference Telkom will broadcast the first day on Summit TV (DSTV channel 55) and stream it on the Internet.

“We believe that, as a responsible corporate citizen, Telkom has an obligation to expose as many people as possible to the ground breaking developments that are ongoing in the communications industry,” said September.

Yeah. I'll tell you what Telkom. If you stream that conference, without capping me because I watched it, then I'll believe your feeble lies.

Semantics - but how do you have a internationally acclaimed Southern African Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference that hasnt happened yet?

The theme should be changed to “Convergence – can technology deliver and at how high a cost?” Do I watch the opening day on my overpriced monopoly controlled internet connection or my overpriced monopoly controlled dstv?

Let me get hold of these people and we'll see if they will allow me to present MY postgrad findings on telecommunications in SA. Or, sorry, is it only for the students Telkom funds....?

Damn, closing date for paper submissions was 6 June.

PLEASE CAN PEOPLE TELL ME IF THEY HEAR ABOUT SUCH CONFERENCES. I AM ELIGIBLE TO APPLY TO THE NRF FOR FUNDING TO ATTEND SUCH THINGS. PLEASE, DAMMIT, TELL ME.

Ok, so that would be a maximum of 70 000 people who could watch it online over a streaming connection so long as the video is the size of a postage stamp and the audio sounds like its playing through string and a can.

For the other 99% of the country who can neither afford the internet nor DSTV, tough ****.

Yeah Telkom, your message is going to reach an astounding 1% of the country - well done !

responsible corporate citizen ?

Wow - wow - wow, pinch me, I think I must be dreaming !

Who knows, I might be surprised...

Just btw, a small little fact I came across a few months ago - Telkom funds more than 75% of all telecoms reserach in SA.

Make you wonder, hey?

and...who else is gonna fund it if they can't use it. I can hazard a guess why they're having the conference in the Drakensburg, harder for protesters to get there :p

This reminds me of something a colleague once said. He said there are many projects for alternative energy sources that end up being funded to certain extent by energy companies. The idea being that once the prototype is ready vrtually no further development is made that could potentially threaten the prevailing revenue model.

It makes me think that a lot of what these reasearchers will deliver is virtually all the products that can only be fully "leveraged" by Telkom.

Streaming LOL
Thats only there for there shareholders in the States probably, HAHA.

How much data tranfer would you use in attempting to Stream that days events as suggested by Telkom?
We should do it, measure the data transfer and use it against the sods to highlight how pathetic and hypocritical their statements are when you look at bandwidth available to the average consumer.
Heres a perfect example to show everyone that Telkom gives with one hand, whilst holding a gun to your head with the other. These low caps and video streaming just dont go together. We know it, they know it, yet they walk around chests out blabbing on about streaming and stuff.
Edit: and if they wanted to expose as many people as possible to this, they would have it on SABC, not DSTV.

Fact is - it is an annual conference that has been running for a number of years.

You're supposed to be Heavy-on-Facts - don't be vague - how many years?

The Drakensburg is slap bang in the middle of Joburg and Durban. May get protesters from both cities to go?

Does anybody know if a protest IS being setup? Its a work day, so probably not.

That weird addition of "All overflow routes for UK (0944) have been blocked to prevent flooding of traffic via Belgium, Switzerland and IDT (London)." Sounds like Xolisa Vapi, 'Senior Specialist: Media Relations' had a big brain fart while cutting and pasting. He's obviously a moron of the first degree.

I Googled that phrase.. guess where it seems to come from? A Finance24 news item: "London blasts congest Telkom" - look for the line. 3 paragraphs and a further 2 lines down in the article..
http://www.finance24.com/articles/companies/display_article.asp?ArticleID=1518-24_1733954

Who wants to first screenshot and save that press release (for posterity) - and then phone this moron and ask him why he included a cut n paste from an article relating to Telkom line congestion after the London bombings, in a press release about a Drakensburg Convergence Bill meeting? (And record the conversation for us :)
