Telecoms execs claim Telkom has a "secret plan" to keep South Africa's mobile data prices high

Telkom is accused of putting its own interests ahead of South Africa regarding spectrum and mobile data prices.

Senior telecoms executives, who spoke to MyBroadband on the condition of anonymity, said Telkom’s fight against the planned spectrum auction is nothing more than a delaying tactic.

They said Telkom's "secret plan" is to keep spectrum out of the hands of Vodacom and MTN to prevent a further decline in mobile data prices.

Both Vodacom and MTN have said additional spectrum will result in a big decline in data prices – something which the execs said Telkom wants to prevent.
I have my doubts that Vodacom or MTN want lower data prices either.

Keep meaning to port from Telkom, the last straw now will do it.

They will lower the data price by a third and then double the interest charged. Have you seen their interest charges. A loan shark would blush!!!

No problem with this, there are many more loan provider choices (Vodalend for VC, what for MTN?) than mobile provider choices.

MTN and Voda is just bitter because they also want to get a piece of ripping off the consumer. South Africa will never have cheap internet for everyone, the overlords said "no".

Erm - what do you think they've been doing?

All these companies have to do to lower prices... is lower their prices.

I love these anonymous sources, which normally don't exist or this is not what they meant, if they do exist. Where is your fact checking? Does MB have proof that this was said @ an investors meeting, a video, signed documents or is this a he said/ she said? If so put it out there. This ends up in huge misinformation. Fact is that in SA the Gov does not like competition or growth. Otherwise they would have switched off the analogue spectrum, years ago.

Let me guess who these executives are. Oh wait no need to guess

They are cheaper. I buy 5gb for R99.

Vodacom and MTN has milked us far more than Telkom ever has

Wait doesnt Telkom own Openserve? Arent they the cheapest fibre provider in SA? That should really give you a clue. For years MTN and Vodacom charged u R2 per mb out of bundle and refused to lower it.

But for many years Telkom ripped us a new one on fixed lines, they are the whole reason MyBB (nè MyADSL) was started.

So they made a certain individual by the name of Rudolph a millionaire.
