HI guys,

i just heard this mornin from one of my friends that in order to have DSL at your home, you also have to have the correct wiring at your telephone jack...

Apparently, your normal telephone cable has four wires in it..which then go into an RJ11 jack/connector in a certain order.
To his understanding, on the rj11 jack, wires 2 & 3 are for your normal voice calls and wires 1 & 4 are for DSL.

Is this true or is he high, because i have only two wires running into my rj11? Do i need Telkom to come and replace the line or something?

Please could someone clarify this for me, coz i really don't feel like phoning telkom and trying to explain this to them so that they can come and put a new line in..... Fanx!

Utter hogwash. Adsl and normal voice both run on the same two wires. Digital PABX use 4 wires.

The old telephone service at one stage loooooooooooong time ago(when phones came out) used a seperate pair for sending and recieving voice but was changed as they found a way to send both on same channel, since then standard pots is a single pair.

ADSL works on the same pair as your normal phone unless you do some funky wiring but then if its the same line, it will eventually go to a single pair. Also if you wire it differently you will struggle to find suitable cable as many have just 1 pair
