Telephone and cellphone number codes in South Africa

But surely number portability makes this information all useless?

It is my understanding that even though one has ported a number to another network, 082 for example is still a Vodacom Prefix, once the number is disconnected or out of service, the number is given back to Vodacom or the donor network (as they call it)

Only with cellphone numbers - cannot port others yet (AFAIK).

not true! The only number that cannot be ported is 087 and some special ranges
Been porting Telkom landline numbers for many many years for example. Telkom also ported a number from one exchange to another exchange in another area!

This list would have come in handy for me some weekes ago, but i found the info elsewhere anyway

AFAIK, you can port cell numbers between different mobile providers and land lines between telkom and voip providers, but you can't port between land line and mobile providers.
I assume because of the different call charges - If I call my buddy on his "land" line from my telkom home phone, I expect to pay 14c a minute or whatever the rate is now - if he's ported his land line number to his mobile, I'll be paying cellular rates and not even know it ..

Presume NW province falls under 04...? They aren't 01... If I remember.

No. NW would be a mix of 05 and 01. See pages 23/24 here: http://www.gov.za/sites/www.gov.za/files/38908_gen650.pdf

04 is the old Eastern Cape Province. From Port St Johns to Mossel Bay (Vleesbaai) and then up past Oudtshoorn to Noupoort and across to Umtata.

I found this in an old presentation. If some kind Neotel connection has the original maybe they will post it here? :p

Nope does not work like that. Once it has been ported to a network it now belongs to that network if you let it expire. I ported a 082 number to MTN and after 3 months the sim was disconnected not long after I heard it was active again but still on the MTN network. Confirmed it with a 082 to MTN and a 078 number to Cellc.

That's a cool map, but it's missing codes. I don't see 042 or 040.

Am I the only person here who still associates 06* numbers with South-West Africa?

Yes there are a few of us that will remember that, and for a while there was a sort of duplicate system running but Namibia now has its own International dial code and numbering plan.

As for the rest? well, there are only a few of us left in the system that really understand how it all worked .... It was possible to work out form the number the "exact" geographical location of an exchange area by just knowing a few very basic "rules"

MickeyD gave the "best" reference yet which is the GG.
