Telkom’s new 100Mbps fibre-to-the-home areas revealed

Fsckers...

So damn close, yet so far from me still *mutter*

They need to update their coverage map.

And compared to other providers their coverage is still tiny.

Any reason the article has Bryanston listed under Johannesburg but the attached image doesn't?

The coverage map has Bryanston listed though. Well part of it anyway.

Those are only the new suburbs added, not all of them...

I know. Hence me saying they need to update their coverage map...

Even with the new areas their coverage is still tiny.

Telkom has the largest open-access fibre network in the country, and fibre is available in multiple suburbs of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, and Port Elizabeth.

Port Elizabeth

Hallack Road

:wtf: ...Hallack Road, Telkoms taking the p!ss out of us now. I had to look it up on the map!

... wonder which connected lucky sod lives there?

Last I heard it was Mill Park, Linkside and the Hallack Road area (not just the road).

One street in PE.

SIES !!

And it is in my exchange area...

Do you reckon the addition of this fibre will free up ports/lessen the load on your or neighbouring exchanges? Or will this tax Telkoms infrastructure further?

Just not sure if fibre runs on the same backhaul or not..

They need to update their information. They're definitely doing Linkside, as they've been working there for the last month laying cables, and the sign that's been put up says they're contractors for Telkom laying fibre. Can't find this information anywhere official though - it wasn't on their coverage map as being planned last time I checked.

All the areas I mentioned in PE work off the Parsons Hill exchange. There are already decent backhaul links there but they are being upgraded as we speak.

Yes, as the FTTH takeup increases, so DSL ports will become available on the DSLAMs and the IMAX in that exchange.

But if it is really only limited to Hallack Road itself (which I doubt) then it will be insignificant.

Agreed. I spoke to one of the project team this morning... definitely Linkside, Mill Park, Hallack Road area as well as some blocks on Cape Road between Target Kloof and Conyngham Road and some blocks near the Provincial Hospital.

D’urbanvale
