Well if you think about it they have absolutely no valid reason to cap local traffic at all. Since you can't really host sites on ADSL that well it means the content will be hosted on diginet, and the diginet connection is being paid for by the content provider.

Asking people to pay for local bandwidth would be like having two types of postage stamps, one for delivery and one for receiving. If you pay for local traffic Telkom effectively get to double bill for the usage.

I wonder if IBurst's gonna be able to deal with the swarm come november lol.

This kinda reminds me of Telkom's role out of lines too under serviced area's.

Battlefield

I am going to have to chat to my son, my Nephew and his mates.
They have been playing Battlefield since it came out non stop.
Battlefield consumes up to 15Kb per player. All local to SAIX servers might I add.
Anyway I will cross that bridge when it comes.
Isn't it rediculous how a Company like Telkom which has no competition just changes the goal posts at will.
I sincerely hope ICASA tackles them over this. At least demand some clarity on the matter.
One would have thought that no changes could be made to the ADSL Billing system until ICASA had finished with their enquiries.

If they really allowed to introduce this billing system, then I have to bid farewell to ADSL. I just simply can't afford it anymore.

must untie to support and encourage ICASA in its efforts,” stated Miller.

ROFL - Anybody want to come and untie me ? Damn humanz. :p

Anywayz - So - the first ISP that offers rollover capacity could have a winning advantage.

Picture it - Cicily 1973 - AYCE offer 10GB packages at R300 (Dreamer I know), you get 12 of them, use them when you want, pay monthly for a year.

The 10GB package consists of 10GB local + 10GB international.

Next problem, you have to login with a different account to use your next package. What a load of CRAP.

The ISP must also do that for you (Control your usage with 1 Login).

Change is in the air - methinks teklom is going to try to sell a SW package for doing this to the self authenticating ISP's. And it's going to be crap, like their existing monitoring (Log off once a day) software.

/Speculation end.

Guys don't be scared of what they are threatening.

They havent made it official just stated that they will change some rubbish.

Ie
Telkom has yet to confirm the exact policies behind their new billing system.

They are holding back for a reason. I personally believe that they are scared at teh moment of ICASA and us all :D . If they were to release the billing scheme then don;t you think that the people would cry out and run amok.

I think that all we need to do it keep pushing and hard as we can and try to change the way things are done. we give them 1 chance, and they will run over us again!!!

We cannot afford that right now. we need to muster our strength and continue the worthy fight. I say we hit the Radio stations and get on air. Then TV. Who knows maybe get to speak with the prez. He did state that he was not happy with telkom!!

Most prob he had to wait for an installation just like us :p

An ISP purchasing software from telkom to "self authenticate" shouldn't be operating,
it's not brain surgery. There are several proggies such as Radius and Free-Radius that can handle authentication, SAIX just need to proxy Authentication requests per realm from their Access Servers to whatever ISP's AAA servers ...

It will be pushed through. ICASA will posture, there will be all sorts of press coverage of how evil they are. They will carry on and nothing will change. Until they have meaningful competition what are you going to do? Lay your own cable down to overseas so that you can have your own Internet?

It's a boxing match.
Teklom saw ICASA was going to punch them in the ribs about 1 year ago when the hearings started.
Teklom then started preparations for the counter punch.
ICASA release their findings, teklom PUNCHES - coincidence ? Me thinks not.

Buy music and pay twice, pay for recieving email(how the f**k are you supposed to control what someone sends you?)

Download a free linux distribution and pay R120!!!!!! Where else in the world is it cheaper and faster to buy a burnt DVD and have it posted to you than it is to use ADSL!!!!!!

And 3Gig per user !!!!!!!!!! Or are we supposed to get one line per person in the house? Bonehead who thought of this excuse probably keeps his wife and kids locked up and they have to ask the 'baas' for permission to use the phone or watch tv or open the fridge.

i didn't say that it wouldn't happen i have just stated the obvious...... they havent made an official statement!!!!

So what does that tell you huh,

someone that is imposing something in the next month will only announce it when they implement it.... what kind of logic is that.

Firstly they have procedure then it has a timeline which it needs to follow.

We could take them to court for not proper procedure......would need to check with a lawyer thou

If Telkom does in fact institute the new billing system, there is only one piece of advice ADSL users should take:

CANCEL!

Start your own internet, I quite like that one. Setup a community network with WiFi like JAWUG and get a Sat link from someone like aerosat and we all share the costs, uncapped and cheap. You’ll be able to play games on it, host your own server on the WAN and get internet access now and then :)

i really don't understand telkom's new billing structure and the fact that anybody using more than 3gb is an abuser of their service.
it contradicts whats happening in 'broadband', telkom has stated its testing iptv or something similar... 3gb ain't gonna last long, even on a 512 connection. and also telkom's new ad on tv clearly projects that super fast broandband is for content, streaming and gaming.
it can't possibly work at the price they offering per gig.
