After years of waiting, my 100Mbps fibre was at long last completed / connected / installed yesterday and although I am very glad to finally have it, I cannot help to feel a little bit dissapointed.

Although much faster than my old trusty 10Mbps ADSL line it currently only gives me down and up speeds of between 40 and 50Mbps over WiFi and between 50 and 70Mbps with a cable.

Now, this is not exactly what I signed up for.

Yesterday after the technician was finished and I did a couple of speed tests, he told me that my speed will improve over time and that I should give it 24 hours. Now, 24 hours later, it remains the same.

My ISP is Telkom.

Is there anything that I can maybe do or try to improve the speed? And by this I mean BEFORE phoning Telkom?

Wow. I wonder if the tech can explain that one? How would your speed increase over time? I think he just wanted to leave and not put in anymore effort.

Were the speed tests international or local? Don't know if you will get the full 100 on international. Try and do some local speed tests as well.

You need to run it in until you have downloaded at least 1TB, then an oil change after 10TB!. Jokes aside, it seems your best course of action is to log a fault with your ISP, and they will sort it out.

Try a different router (if possible).

I had similar results with my 100mb Openserve line. After some testing my router wasn't up to the task to deliver the required speeds. Bought a new one and I'm a happy chappy and get full line speed :)

Yes, I was thinking the same thing! Which router did you get?

I love reading techie replies. If you were a business with no firewall and 100 clients, perhaps a few servers, yes I would agree. But a house connection after a few minutes...LOL "speed will improve".

Fixed, router was the problem.

Turns out it can only give a maximum of 65Mbps on 2.4GHz, I switched to 5GHz and what do you know, 90+ down and 40+ up. Works perfectly.

Everything on my home network links to the 5GHz frequency except my PS4. That's a pity.

Anyway, it's a Telkom Technicolor VDSL & Fibre-Ready AC1600 Wi-Fi Router.

............may i ask regarding the 2.4Ghz router: did your ISP provide that shite to you when they came to install or was it a router you had laying around which you just re-purposed for Fibre? If it was the ISP who gave you a router incapable of reaching the max speed you paid for....well......that's just shocking then (specially if the TECHNICAL SUPPORT tells you that the speed will get better over time)

But you tested the old router with a lan cable and only got between 50 and 70 Mbps? Now you are getting higher speed on wifi?

It is the router provided by Telkom for fibre! The technician brought it with him when he came to do the installation. He of course said NOTHING of the 5GHz frequency. That I had to figure out for myself.

It's not an old router, it's brand new! But yes, correct, I'm now getting much higher wifi speeds on the 5GHz frequency! I will have to run another few tests with my laptop via cable to see what's cooking now. Those first tests, I did while the technician was still there. When I only got around 40 to 50Mbps down on wifi, he suggested that I do the test via cable. Which I did. The first test was just above 50 down (I think on speedtest.net), the second was around 60 down (mybroadband and speed.com) the third test he navigated to a Telkom server which provided around 70 down.
