Telkom to debut 1Mbps service in June

http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/telecoms/2005/0504061200.asp?S=Internet&A=INT&O=FRGN

BY RODNEY WEIDEMANN, ITWEB TELECOMS EDITOR

[Johannesburg, 6 April 2005] - Following its recent launch of a low-end 192Kbps DSL product, Telkom plans to release a high-end 1Mbps service in June.

Steven White, Telkom's executive for new product development, says the offering will be aimed at the small to medium business market, although it could also be opened up to the residential market, if there is interest.

“I do believe there is more of a niche market for an offering like this, but obviously if there is enough interest from residential users for this product, we will look at that market too,” he says.

“Pricing on the new service will be reasonable and there won't be a linear price adjustment in comparison to our other offerings.

“We are not at liberty to divulge what the cost of the service will be as of yet, but I do believe that customers will be pleasantly surprised by the price,” says White.

The announcement of the new offering comes as Telkom gears up for a section 27 regulatory hearing into how ADSL service should be provided.

The hearings are due to take place at the offices of the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) at Pinmill Farm in Sandton, between 11 and 14 April, and are the result of an official complaint lodged by MyADSL in February last year regarding Telkom's ADSL service.

According to MyADSL founder, Rudolph Muller, the initial complaints were focused on the high cost of line rental and modem installation, with other issues including those of the bandwidth caps, shaping issues and other limitations on the service.

White says a lot has happened in the industry since the initial complaint was made and there is now a lot of competition in this market, but the hearings are still focused solely on Telkom, so the company's submission to ICASA will basically be asking “why only us?”

“There is a lot of water under the bridge since the complaint was first made, and I believe we have a much improved service now,” he says.

“We are proud of our track record and, even though there have been some hiccups, we have worked hard to keep our service levels up to a very high standard.

“In fact, in a comparative study of our offerings and those of our competitors on the MyADSL Web site, our HomeDSL 384 and HomeDSL 512 services have been placed first and second, so we can't be doing too much wrong, can we?”

Telkom ADSL ... as recommended by readers of myadsl.co.za ;).

But he does have a valid point thought ... looking at iBurst, UUNET ADSL and AYCE lately their offering is rather more realiable and stable than that of the competition.

I wish these guys will stop saying that broadband is a ‘niche market’. They simply make it a niche market due to the price. A few months ago I have heard from a Telkom employee that the initial mobile phone market in South Africa was also called a niche market…enough said!

Sheesh - so teklom intends to skew and delay the hearings by bringing up the "Why only us ?" point.

If the stupid process didn't take so long, then maybee we would not even have had this issue.

Why can't teklom just forget about delaying tactics and play nicely in the hearings?

Hi Tibby.dude

I agree that their service is superior, but it is based on much more mature and cheaper technology. The fact that the other South African suppliers do not currently compete favorably with ADSL does not mean that Telkom is not ripping us off and providing an internationally inferior service. Come next week they better be prepared for a few questions from our side (I have already put in leave :D)

Ja, ja... just act stupid. In the meanwhile Telkoms the one strangling the whole country with their ridiculously inflated prices and monopoly on the bandwidth. Why only us? Because its your fault all the others are so expensive. You force them to be because you set the price they can get bandwidth at, thats why.

Here is a theory.

Telkom launches new service, how long do you think it will take to hit a 3gb cap.

Telkom now will make twice the money on just Accounts sold alone ? and here anther idea, it will kill the uncapped services as it will not allow VPN etc ? I may be wrong, but I think Telkom is looking at reducing Diginet connections. As a point to point service lets say it would cost you R 4000 for two accounts plus two line and that will give you 1 meg duplex.

A leased line will cost you R 14000 and its only half duplex ?

By the way, has nayone though of the potential of DSTV getting in and running over this ? I think they have !!!

In others words expect Telkom to make the hole in your Ass even larger.>_<

Most of us will be six feet under before Telkom stops ripping us off.

Compared to offerings in a market completely screwed by Telkom's overpriced international bandwidth. Yes, in a market with next to no choice, Telkom was the best.

It's like being asked if you'd rather be hit on the head with a sledgehammer or a kicked in the @ss. Just because people choose @ss kicking doesn't make it right.

<opinion>Steven White is an obfuscating @sshole.</opinion>

Does wireless options compete in the real world with ADSL, or does the various ADSL providers compete agianst each other?

The way I understand things are that wireless options are actually some kind of luxury compared to fixed line, except....

I'm sure we won't be surprised at all, we already know what your pricing is like, extremely high.

I think some of you guys working at Telkom should come to the UK and see what broadband is all about. If you've read the news lately, you'll know that BT is about to sign up its 5 millionth customer, and do you want to guess why that might be, because their service is fast and most important of all, cheap, very cheap.

But then again you guys aren’t in the telecoms business to offer telecom services, but rather to milk SA dry.

Who else thinks it is rediculous offering unless they make bigger caps available. If they release it as is, it is just another means at reaching your cap twice as fast as the current 512k offering.

I wish you guys the best of luck at the ICASA hearings and spare telkom no mercy. Tell them exactly what us poor South African's think of them and their greed.
