Telkom 20Mbps and 40Mbps DSL and FTTC network plans

I think this is a great initiative by Telkom. Good to see action rather than words, and the willingness to push money into what is important – better broadband access and increased penetration rates.

How is this affected by LLU or how does LLU affect this?

Can non Telkom parties also roll out VDSL DSLAMS connected to their own fibre networks?

Now this is a great question. To my understanding the route which ICASA is contemplating with LLU (facilities leasing regulations) it will not make much of a difference, but Telkom may well argue that their investment means that other players can not get access to this copper as it does not run to the exchange.

According to information received by MyBroadband, the company will roll out high speed DSL services at a few exchanges around the country to trial new 20Mbps and 40Mbps DSL technologies.

RPM - Any idea which exchanges are to be part of the trial,
heard PE & George are not part of trial although we have
10 Mb/s ADSL in these regions

Good to see their initiatives, although it would be better to see exchanges upgraded in general.

Only good if data pricing is cheap. There is not an affordable uncapped 10mb offering yet...

Trial new technologies all you want but ffs make them affordable and available....seems like 384 will live forever

I'm still waiting for 10mbps service.....hmmmm
Unless you reside in a very high revenue generating exchange area you are going to wait a long time.

It will last forever... or at least until the DoC revises its definition of broadband.

One year ago Telkom announced that it is upgrading exchanges to 10Mb/s.

As far as most (if not all) customers in Centurion are concerned, this was and still is a lie.

Is this really new? A few years ago, I heard from a Telkom tech that Alberante in Alberton already had fibre to it's junction boxes as part of an upgrade program. He also said that the program was stalled. Maybe that was for POTS lines? Anyway, I give this new program the thumbs up. If Telkom can get their backoffice and on-the-ground techs working in a half-coordinated way, this can move fairly quickly. :) But past experience has shown that they can't. :(

20 MB ? I wish they could first upgrade my exchange to 10MB...
