Telkom 20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL milestone

That is still a quarter of 1% of the population. Hardly anything to write home about, let alone an article.

While the vast majority of the population are either stuck without access to ADSL or are stuck on impotent speeds, awful service and degradated infrastructure.

Blow your smoke elsewhere, Telkom...

well it is 10% of their DSL base, to be fair.

The thing that is bugging me however is where all these people, who are sporting a "superfast" VDSL line, are hiding away ? Surely if there were more than 100k active VDSL ports we would have seen a significant amount of mybb users posting about their new VDSL lines ?

Maybe BOSS RPM should do a forum poll, to see how many adsl-using-members here have been able to upgrade.
100k seems unbelievable.

Mybb is like hellopeter. People only come here when they have something to complain about. When you have 40mbps.. what is there to complain about? :p

125000 is the number of active vdsl CAPABLE ports connected to customers.....it doesn't mean 125000 people are already subscribing to 20/40mbps vdsl...many could be still subscribed to normal adsl speeds and did not feel the need to upgrade.

Point is 125000 people have the choice so far so thats 10% of their customer base.

Who cares? I am still waiting for 10mbps ADSL..... :whistling: Telkom as serious useless twats.......

Why do people keep going on about this? There is no point in upgrading an exchange to 10mbps capability when you can jump straight to vdsl tech.

Not really, this figure doesn't take geography into account. You need to be pretty close to the port for 20Mbps and even closer for 40Mbps.

The actual number of people in the right location (and that have the right cable routing) is way, way less, a minuscule fraction of the above figure.

It comes from the general "don't care" attitude of Telkom.

e.g. Telkom hasn't done anything about the quality of my line for the last six years. Started on 384kbps and upgraded to 4Mbps (in 2008 IIRC). Since then the highest stable sync rate I have been able to achieve has been 3Mbps (that's in winter). When it rains in summer I have to downscale to 2Mbps to keep the line stable. Telkom have done absolutely nothing about this since then.

So when I hear about these fantastic speeds I take it with a container full of salt. It probably won't ever happen (even though I live in quite a built up suburb).

They're re-cabling some parts of the town. Green conduits with bigger green pipes. A year ago they laid an orange conduit on the same route. Why do all these and still not allow us to get 10 Mbps?

I know exactly what you mean, I asked if they could upgrade me to 10 Mbps and I just stumbled upon a comment on the order by one of the employees he said "why is this chap so eager to get 10 Mbps?". Just show's their mentality.

Impressive numbers...but the impact to customers are negligible? I am one of those people with an available port...but i am 3km from the exchange...no good to me.

Does someone on MyBB have the roll out schedule or the areas marked for upgrade?

100mbps of course. :D

On a more serious note, we would just like to be able to stream youtube videos without interruption. Nowadays with the constant improvement of picture quality (vga to HD) 1 or 2mbps really don't go as far as it used to.

"it doesn't mean 125000 people are already subscribing to 20/40mbps vdsl"

All articles should leave "speed" out of it and just refer to "VDSL services".

As Roman4604 correctly highlights, distance from the MSAN unit will determine the "speed".

10MBps and VDSL are separate technology, with the MSAN rollout I doubt you'd see any further 10MBps ADSL rollouts.

I follow someone on twitter who recently upgraded to one of the 20mb lines and going by his tweets over the weekend he isn't impressed by the service so far. Complaining of severely undercut speeds and line instability.
