Telkom 40Mbps VDSL trial details

Why is it always Durbanville that gets it first?

See the part about it going to cost more, would love to know what they will charge for it.

Why does everyone assume that it will cost more than current ADSL offerings? The cost to deliver these services is actually lower than the current DSLAM units, as there is a lot more space. More capacity to sell = less price per megabit. Remember that international data is a fraction of the total cost of access - IPC and other Telkom fees make up the brunt.

They themselves said it would cost more here.

That's sound good. But why on trail bases. They have to introduce it with full power. They cost very expensive

Well it sure as hell is not going to be cheaper.

Internal market research documents last year indicated they were aiming for at least 20mb uncapped at a price of R900 a month, including phone line rental and a closer package. The only reason we pay so much now is because of infrastructure scarcity. In areas where metro ethernet is available, they have seen no issue in going from 4mb > 10mb because it does not cost them the earth. Expect the same for the MSAN project.

You're forgetting that Telkom doesn't operate that way?

They spent money on the MSAN's. They are facing quite a large fine. They have to get it back somehow.

Wonder if this will mean that in 2015 we'll have fast=2M; faster=4M; fastest=10/20/40M...

Also, the article only mentions ADSL/VDSL, what are the FTTx plans mentioned in an earlier article?

All very nice but I still don't even have a freaking 10 meg line yet! This is just more eye candy... I for one would find this much easier to believe if everyone with a 4 meg line was already upgraded to a 10 meg line. If they can't even get that right, then what is the chance of this becoming a viable option for the consumer to choose from?

There will “by necessity” be a different price for these services, Sallie said.

A necessity dictated by costs or the ability to exploit the bandwidth starved consumer as the only fixed line provider? Higher costs I can possibly understand (as long as it is not due to mismanagement).

Eastern Cape? Wheres That... It sucks living in the forgotten province, at least its not the Northern Cape...

Everything happens here last! (Except for Cell C 3G)

Well thats a knee jerk reaction right there buddy, but if you bother to think about it for a while you will realize thats what they are doing.I'm fully behind them on this one.

I'm in the same boat as you because our area is over subscribed and under serviced by dslams,my friend on a 4mb line only gets speeds that a 1mb line should experience,it will cost them more to switch everybody to 10mb in my area than installing the new infrastructure which wont become outdated anytime soon so its a great move from telkom because this would eliminate the need for a double upgrade because 10mb is not cutting edge anymore.

Have patience and let them get things done.Even if you dont want faster than 10mb/s naturally the prices of 10mb/s would come down with the new infrastructure.
