Telkom caught using other provider’s infrastructure for fibre

Telkom and Openserve are accused of unlawfully using network infrastructure of another provider to offer fibre broadband services.

The unlawful use of network infrastructure was discovered during the recent R30 million upgrade of the fibre optic cable network in Midstream Estate.

Why would it be. It's a serious issue. Telkom seem to think they're still the post office
Telkom has IMO a reasonable explanation. Anyway, municipalities or ICASA should declare that trunking is to shared, or leased/rented to other players. For new development communications trunking to every household should be compulsory.

Well, if the ICASA ruling on behalf of Vodacom was that the sharing of duct infrastructure in the estates was “technically and economically feasible”, and “promoted the efficient use of networks and services”, it is applicable to all providers.

Should be could be but is not. There's the story. It's a serious issue that costs real money to solve.
And as for not labelling stuff... ooi.

Looking at it, I think nobody ever thought they'd get confused by their own infrastructure as each provider use different shapes of boxes. Now contractors come in and they don't know what belongs to who. The issue isn't with the ducting as that is shared and controlled by the estate.

But I thought they used differently-coloured fiber cable?

Those big-ass reels of fiber cable rolls can be coloured differently, blue for telkom, red for voda, yellow for mtn etc etc etc...

You can remove Telkom from their monopoly, but you cannot remove the monopolistic attitude from Telkom.
